Today, after I booted into Vista, I noticed that the gpu temperature of my asus laptop (g51vt-rx05) started rising to 85C!!! range (HWMonitor) when idling.
At the same time, I also discovered that the gpu fan didn't turn on.
So, I quickly rebooted the machine (and logged to windows again) and it appeared that the gpu fan was back on and temperature went back to normal.
What is the reason for the fan not turning on? What's going on? It just happened once today. I got this laptop one week
ago from bestbuy.
Should I be worried?
(I already installed the newest nvidia drivers; the laptop was running on AC adapter) This is my first post on this forum![]()

strange.... very...
maybe dust at fan, that didnt leit him to start y dont know what more -
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
Over the years I've learned that strange things can happen with computer electronics on a single incident or even occasional basis that can't be explained (my older Dell desktop can't seem to find the boot drive every few months) - call it gremlins, evil orange smurfs, cosmic rays, whatever works for you.
Since the fan problem occurred just once and then corrected itself on reboot, something probably glitched during the BIOS check or whatever and the fan sensor or software blinked. Generally, this is probably unlikely to recur but keep a loose eye on fan activity for a while and if it starts to happen repeatedly then there may be a sensor or electrical issue that could be fixed. If you send it in now for rma, chances are the fan issue won't be replicated by tech support and they'll just send it back.
Bottom line -- you're quite likely to be fine and shouldn't worry about it, but if it starts repeating that's what warranty coverage is for. Enjoy your new purchase. -
This has happened to me when I first got the laptop, when the nvidia powermizer settings werent kicking in. The fan would turn off at ~60C then continually heat up until ~80, which became a loop.
Download GPU-Z and make sure your clocks are lowered when you arent doing anything graphically intensive (you can see this in the 'sensors' tab, clocks should be Core:200MHz Memory:120MHz)
If they are stuck at 500 and 800 then go look for the powermizer switch, or update video card drivers -
Any suggestions for driver download software?

I can't figure out what this has to do with this topic - please don't hijack the thread.... just start a new one. -
I believe he means which driver to use for enabling powermizer, as some seem to have issues with it. Which is very pertinent to the thread.

Yes, I was referring to FuniGTR's comment about updating video card drivers since I have had a similar issue with my GPU climbing to 82C for some random reason. Although I'm more concerned about the sudden temperature rise more so than whether the fan turned on or not.
In any case I haven't succeeded to enable Powermizer yet and that might be because of outdated drivers. I did a scan and apparently over 40% of my drivers were outdated. So that's why I asked if there was any recommended software to download video card updates (along with anything else) to hopefully allow Powermizer to work. Rxon240 might want to do the same. -
Give DOX 185.85 a shot, i think most people have moved on to 186.XX. But i've been playing around with several drivers, and powermizer seemed to work with DOX straight from the install (without the use of powermizer switch).
The temperatures also seem to be lower with the DOX drivers, which opposes the idea that they are meant to increase performance at the sacrifice of temps. -
DOX didn't enable powermizer on default for me. In vista or win7.

Hmm thats very weird, i've tried on both vista and 7 and it worked :S
in any case, it can be fixed with the powermizer switch -

To temple to hope for basic knowledge in software navigation.

I don't think I even know where to find that (obviously since I just tried searching and didn't find it). Keep in mind about my newbiness. I need people to show me the door before they point me in the right direction. >.>

Take the time to explore your computer, your OS, the basics. You don't need to change or edit anything, rather just know the ins and outs and where everything is that is accessible to you on the software level. It will make it a lot easier for us to help you in the future if you familiarize yourself with Windows. That way, you don't have to throw up the pity card every time.
