so I tried to install windows 7 on my G51 (I created a new partition on my hard drive called F: and had it install there) and when its 99% complete, a window pops up that says setup failed and my computer restarts. When my computer restarts, it tries to boot windows vista into safe mode. After about 30 seconds of looking a a window saying "windows is collecting files", another window pops up saying "C:/recovery.bat could not be read" and "ERROR" in big red letters. I tried restarting several times and it still comes back to this screen. Realizing I was fortunate enough to bring along my ASUS restore DVD's to college, I put one in to see if I could recover vista. The first white/orange cd works, but when I put in the driver cd when prompted, I get another error saying some file off the cd could not be read. So I restart again and windows vista launches . . . I inadvertently did a clean install, lol. Anyways, my question is basically should I attempt to install windows 7 again? Any advice in general would be appreciated, thank you

is your disk scratched up? mine had minor scratches and it failed when i tryed to install it.

You need to delete the recovery partition.

@swift sniper
yeah, my drivers disk had scratches, but I eventually got it to work
@vvaid
how would I delete the recovery partition? vista wouldn't start at all before so I couldnt really delete a partition . . . unless I used a linux boot disc or something -
I think you solved your own question! -
If your using the Win 7 leak from online that one doesn't always work.

@thebest
yeah, I figure I'll just spend the $50 because I'm a student
@element
Its too late now . . . I wiped everything and installed again. I'll keep that in mind for the future though, thank you -
Here is how you do a Windows7 installation without the recovery partition. You basically let it create the recovery partition and you OS partition, then delete the OS partition and extend the recovery partition to use all the space on the drive. You can rename the partition too, if needed, after the install completes.

I just installed Win 7 RTM on my G71gx with no problems. I just deleted the windows partition with vista then installed Win 7 X64 fresh. No problems.

Don't try all these complicated steps!
Get your bootable Windows 7 disk and there is an option to delete partitions. Just search for it.
If your disk isn't automatically booting, then press esc during the startup logo of ASUS and then it'll ask to press any key to boot from cd. You can delete partitions JUST BY USING THE BOOTABLE DISK. Don't mess with other things and end up getting other errors. Find it within the Win7 install screen. -

okay, I'll try that . . . just more of a general question here: do I need to firmat a new partition on my harddrive to install 7 there, or is there an option to put it into unallocated/unformatted space? On my first hard drive I want to shrink my vista partition to half and put 7 on the other, but do I need to format that second half?

The point is, hopefully some of what was said in this post helped pgrim91. I used the article in the link I specified to complete my Win7 install (sans recovery partition) so I thought that would be clear enough for others to use.
@pgrim91
If you repartition a drive, it is usually best to format the new partition as most OSs expect them to be formatted for the install to continue. There are some OSs that will format a drive if it isn't already formatted, but I wouldn't take any chances personally (I am always wary of automatic formatting prior to install). In this scenario I would recommend formatting the partition before proceeding with your install as you are not sure of the state of the new partition. -
It was a good link ren3g7ade, but I am lazy and appreciate people like vvaid117.
No offense intended.
