Hey, I just purchased a g60vx from best buy a few days ago. So far I love this thing. I do have a question about the temperature though. When it's idle or just surfing the web, the gpu usually sits between 58-60C. I understand that to be about normal, but is it normal for the fans to slow down or shutdown after a while and let the temperature go up to 86C then have the fan kick back on and cool it down? TIA for any input. I just want to make sure this is normal before my return/exchange period is up.

86c is a bit high it should be spinning at that temp.

Looks like your card isn't clocking down correctly. What drivers are you using?

Also, download and run GPU-Z and observe the clocks as you do your everday stuff (making sure that GPU-Z continues to observe clocks even when it's in the background).

I'll have to check the clock speeds when I get home. I downloaded the latest drivers off nvidias website.

It doesn't always run at 86c, it'll idle around 58-60 for like 10 min. Then it sounds like the fan slows down or shuts off. Then it'll let the temp get up to 86c and then kick the fans on high. It'll cool it back down to normal idle temps, stay like that for about 10 min and then slow or shut off the fan and repeat the same thing.

Ok, so I checked my firmware. I was running 195.62, I then went to 186.81 and the temperature would spike every so often. I checked the clock speeds on gpuz, they always read 500/800/1250. I checked the min, max, average and they're all the same. I checked memory used, that stays around 58-60 for just web browsing. The GPU, memory, and video load never went about 3% while I was doing basic browsing.

For the most part the gpu temperature sits around 58-60C but every 10 or so minutes it seems like the gpu fan shuts off then the temperature climbs to 86C before it'll kick back on and lowers it back to regular temperatures. If I put my hand next to the exhaust vent when the temperature starts to raise, I don't feel any air coming out at all. I'm mainly trying to find out if this is normal or not, I honestly don't know as this is the first gaming laptop I've ever owned.

Sorry if I sound like I keep saying the same thing over and over, I'm just trying to make sure I give a clear explanation of what's happening. Again TIA for any input on this, I just don't want to find out down the road that this is abnormal once I'm out of the exchange/refund period.

Thanks for the info Sean. I'm prolly going to exchange the laptop just to be safe. But I'll definitely look into undervolting it even though the CPU keeps cool all the time and I'll get the rivia tuner fix.

What bios version you got? Try flashing to the newest bios. I had problem similar to yours on my other laptop and flashing bios fixed it.

I ended up swapping it out, and it turned out to be a good thing I did. When I went to swap it the guy brought up a new G60, but it turned out to be the G60Jx which isn't even on bestbuy's website yet. It ended up being about $108 more, but is worth it.

The G60Jx has the core i5 430m @ 2.26Ghz, the geforce gts 360m, a 500gig HDD (320 on the G60Vx), and DDR3 ram instead of the G60Vx's DDR2. This runs a lot cooler mainly due to the chipsets being smaller. While browsing the web the cpu runs between 35-38C (Vx ran around 47-50C) and the gpu runs around 44-46C (Vx ran 58-61C). Also it doesn't have that ugly blue and silver cover anymore, it now has a much nicer IMO black cover with the same LED lights on it. Now off to test how crysis runs on it. Thanks to everyone for their input.

Unless I'm mistaken, the GTS 360m has a little less horsepower than the GTX 260m.

Anyway, it's good that your GPU is behaving itself. By the way, from what you were describing it looked like your GPU wasn't downclocking correctly and was always running at 3D Gaming speeds even in the desktop. Powermizer issue.

From what I've read, the GTS 360m and GTX 260m are pretty close in terms of power. The GTX 260m has more shaders than the GTS 360m but the 360m is clocked slightly higher. But the 360m does run significantly cooler and should consume less power. Any how I get almost the same frame rate in crysis.

But the gpu on the new one does downclock properly, while browsing the web it runs at 135/270/135. Much cooler on my legs :)

That's a very good question, I didn't even know that model existed until the guy at best buy pulled that one by accident when I went to exchange my g60vx.

The one I have is the G60Jx-RBBX05. It's a core i5 2.26GHz, 4Gb ddr3 pc1066 ram, 500Gb 7200rpm HDD, GeForce GTS360m 1Gb gddr5. The screen is still 1366x768 though, I was hoping maybe it would be 1920x1080. I haven't seen any specs online yet and best buy doesn't even have it on their website yet. But at the store it was $999.99, I thought the extra $100 it cost to upgrade was well worth it. If there's any other specs you want to know I'll be happy to check them and post them up.

If you're on the battery, does the GPU not go to full clock speeds while trying to play games?

Huh. I was right about to pick up the G60VX for myself in 2 weeks, but if this is a slight bit better I might pick it up instead. $1000 I'm assuming rather then $900?

Edit: And assuming this is the model replacing the G60VX, then it makes sense that the G60VX just went outlet.

Well awesome. I think I'll bite then. An i5 + cooler running system + less tacky design, seems well worth the extra $100

Everything else is the exact same though I take it? Same size and everything?

Know the battery life yet or is it too soon to tell? Seems like youre the first case of these things out in the wild.

    Need more pics
Does the keyboard have led backlight?
    What res in the screen?
    How are the viewing angles?
Give us the rest of the specs, hdd, ddr3? usb3.0?

Thx and grats on the new lappy.

Edit: Ah i saw your specs up top, ty.)

The case it exactly the same minus the better looking lid. There is one thing they changed, they moved the usb port in the rear. There are now 2 usb ports on the left instead of one on the left and one on the rear. They also moved the ports away from the exhaust vent which is good.

As for the battery life, I haven't got to test it on games as the GPU appears to only clock up to half speed on the battery. I don't know if it's the drivers, hopefully it is since as of now all the gts 360m drivers are laptop manufacturer specific with no official nvidia ones yet. But for web browsing it seems to have increased by about half an hour.

I have GPU-Z where would I find this? Says on the sensors tab
    GPU core Clock 549.6 MHz
    GPU memory clock 1793.6 MHz
    GPU Shader Clock 1323.0 MHz

Do you think my drivers are outdate for my Nvidia GTS 360M, ive been looking for drivers that support it for an hour now and havent found it.

    GPU temp is 81.0 C

As of right now you're only going to find drivers for the 360m on asus' website. For now the only drivers out there are laptop manufacturer specific.

That is the correct reading in GPU-Z. Is that also what it reads when you're playing a game on just the battery? Because mine reads at that while plugged in but for some reason on just the battery it cuts the clock speed in half which causes the games to run choppy.

Ok that's also what I'm getting, thanks for checking. I just wanted to make sure it's supposed to do that. I hope with a newer driver it let's it clock at full speed while on the battery.

Ya me too, if you have any other problems ill compare it too mine if that would help. Maybe ill pick up a cooling system of some sort. Haha yesterday when I was getting it I saw the G60VX on display and then I asked the guy if he could get the laptop out so I could buy it and he just got the JX version and at the time I didn't know so got to the register and the total came to $1123 (G60JX+$50 headphones) I was thinking I miscalculated the tax. Then I got home opened it and saw the black black camo cover which was really a relief because I hate the blue one. Then I opened it up and saw i5 processor, im glad I didn't have to settle with the dual core.

Same here, I was worried at first that the gts 360m wouldn't perform as well as the gtx 260m that was in the g60vx. But all my games run nearly identical to what they ran on the gtx 260m. Crysis runs awesome on high settings.

All im hearing is "my games run nearly identical" what does that mean exactly?
I take it, its slightly slower then the gtx260m.

    How bout some benches guys?

I don't have any benches yet except for crysis. With the gtx 260m I would get 30-32fps on average. And with the gts 360m I get 28-30fps on average. I did them both on the 32 bit crysis gpu benchmark.

Not bad at all. Wish I could try a hands on with a 360m if it's really that comparable to a GTX 260m.

Or, rather, a 9800m GTX, since that's what the G51vx card actually is. It's underclocked.

It looks mainly black under lights except for the dark gray accents. The black also looks like it has a carbon fiber like weave in it. I like it a lot, it looks a lot cleaner and attracts less attention. I'll post some benchmarks soon.

you kindda gave your self the answer to that one already

"I bought the Asus G60JX two weeks ago with the problem in which it froze whenever trying to run Steam or any gaming application. I returned it two days later thinking that it was a hardware problem. The Geek Squad was of course no help so they settled with exchanging it after 20 minutes of explaining the problem. Anyway, I got the 2nd ASUS G60JX and had the same problem. I had read about problems with audio devices conflicting with applications so I decided to first disable Realtek HD audio device. Then I ran Steam and Battlefield 2 flawlessly but without sound. Figured if I deleted the Realtek HD audio manager that I would be able to run the default Microsoft Audio Manager and after deleting it I have not had any problems with any application.

SOLUTION: Delete Realtek HD Audio Manager in your control panel programs. After deleting you will be prompted with a restart option, click restart now. This will complete the deletion process as well as automatically activate the default Microsoft Audio Manager.

I know this will help you guys out, this is NOT a HARDWARE PROBLEM.

    Good luck gamers!"

    =D
