I'm looking to buy a laptop as a desktop replacement for gaming and school work along with occasional image editing and I'm stuck between two laptops. Both are ASUS, and the only difference that I notice is the HD size and battery- and the CPU.

    Laptop 1: G60VX-RBBX05 ($999.99)
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+...lack/9556072.p?skuId=9556072&id=1218124204092

    Laptop 2: G60Vx-RBBX09 ($1199.99)
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+...Blue/9568112.p?skuId=9568112&id=1218125777703

Laptop 2 has a 320 GB larger HD for a total of 640 GB which would take me quite a while to fill up since I'm not the most multimedia savvy but it would be nice to have for my music/movies so I don't have to put them on an external if the internal fills up.
It also has a 9-cell battery instead of a 6-cell. A longer battery life would be nice to have though I wont be transporting it much other than to school every once and a while but they have outlets I can use it needed...
    Also, Laptop 2 has a Q8700 2.53 GHz processor over Laptop 1's 2.13.

Mainly what I would like to know if it is worth the extra money for the faster processor if I will be playing games like WoW, Crysis, Modern Warfare 2 (hopefully?) but you can include if you think the HD and battery are also worth it.

    Thanks
    Nick

If you don't intend to do anything to your computer's insides, then yes $1200 is worth it. The P8700 overclocks to 2.8ghz I believe using the included Asus software.

Concerning HDD space, it's super easy to find yourself a second harddrive and install it yourself. Easy enough for a Geico caveman.

The 320gb model lacks a second HD Cage. You can still stick it in without optimal heat dissipation but it's annoying.

How much of a difference will the CPU make for gaming such as Crysis, WoW, etc.? A few less FPS and I'll keep the $200, but if it's more like 20 then maybe I will part with it...

Not huge. Either way, Asus allows you to overclock it (built in) or go crazy via SetFSB (as high as the chip and heat allow you to).

Think about it longterm not just when you buy it. X less FPS everytime you play it.

Just a question... Since this laptop has HDMI OUT, can I get a HDMI Male to DVI cable and output from the laptop to my monitor that only has DVI and VGA?

It's not like the fps loss accumulates. A drop from 30 fps to 29 fps will always be 30 to 29, it's not going to all of a sudden drop from 30 to 10, so I don't know why you would be concerned.

    Yes.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if it was a different signal or something that my monitor wouldn't recognize that maybe TVs would. (Though I don't know if TVs even have a DVI in?)

Is the RBBX09 the fastest possible model you can get right now without going over $1500? (I mean without/before any configurations to the machine.) I don't just wanna go on ahead and buy it if there's something faster I could get for a little more money; I'm primarily concerned about gaming.

    For $1500, you can get a G51j with a Core i7.

question for those that own the RBBX09...
i know it has a 9-cell battery. does the battery protrude out from the laptop? in other words, is it still flush with the laptop like the RBBX05 model? thank you :)

No idea. It will protrude, that's all I have deduced. If you are concerned, you should buy the 9 cell version and buy a separate 6 cell battery on Ebay for regular use and keep the 9 cell for trips.

My brain is about fried after reading through 3 topics and links to 3 more Web sites, so hopefully someone here can point me in the right direction. Too many models to choose from and I am selling my Dell next week.

    - Cost is no object
    - G60Vx-RBBX09 or G71Gx-A2 or any other recommendations
    - Backlit keyboard preferred
    - Latest GPU
    - Fastest CPU
    - Case appearance not important

The computer will be used primarily for gaming.

Additionally I am a bit leery of Win 7 64 bit only because some of my software will not run on a 64 bit O/S. Does anyone have experience downgrading to Win XP on these newer laptops? I am especially concerned about driver issues.

i personally thought 17" was too big for me, but maybe not for you.
might also wanna take a look at the G51VX-X3 at newegg. i'm torn between that one and the RBBX09. 50 dollar difference, but one has a higher res and bluetooth, the other comes with a 9-cell batt and a second HDD.

Alienware M15x? If Cost is no object - it sports superior cooling and i7 processors. The Asus alternative is the G51J, which runs hot.

Do you have a link - could not find this model on Newegg.com?

CitizenPanda thanks for the input, although I would have to put the Alienware at the bottom of the list - specd one out similar to the Asus G71Gx-A2 and maybe I was doing something wrong, but it came to almost $800 more?!? While cost is no object, I can't justify spending more on what is practically the same hardware.

yeah be smart haha. i was originally looking at an alienware and had it spec'd out to cost me about $3800 after shipping. couldn't justify that on a laptop.

url to the G51VX-X3A (i left out the A at the end before)

That's because the G71 is a 17" and you're comparing it to a 15.6" one. Obviously the smaller it is crammed into with the equivalent or better hardware, the more expensive it will be.

Anyone now the temperature for the G60Vx-RBBX09/G60Vx-RBBX05 during high load?

Is the G60Vx-RBBX09 warmer then G60Vx-RBBX05, because of the extra HDD and faster CPU?
