..speechless..
-
Yummy. 2-3X faster than my M50 but at a cheaper pricepoint.
-
I wonder what the screen's like - if there's no FHD option it'd be a shame.
-
a gts 250 with 128bit bus wth.
-
i think they use gddr5, which turns out to be a bit better than gddr3 @ 256 bit.
-
Why not use the GTS 260M?
EDIT - I just found out the G51JI made a thread so you guys can talk about it.
-
wow a tier 1 card with a 128bit bus but only if the uses gddr5(what happened to counting gddr3 then gddr5?) i'll believe it when i see it.
-
Reminds me of "The dept. of redundancy dept." -
If you don't care about G60j and just want to share about the G51J, then we can close my thread and change this thread's name or something lol
-
So they put in a better processor but lowered the video card? Or is the 250 the NEW 260?
-
Doesn't seem very impressive. Better CPU but weaker GPU..meh. The new Clevo W860CU on the other hand looks awesome. I'll wait until DX 11 chips are out in Jan/Feb 10 before ditching this G51.
-
wow i7 that is impressive for a budget laptop.
-
Do you guys really consider $1200+ budget? I sure don't. Maybe compared to an overpriced AW it is budget but compared to everything else on the market in this depressed economy, it's in the mid to upper end of pricing. -
It's quite a bit weaker than a GTX 260m so in essence, they're gimping the system to make up for the i7 cost. I'm glad I didn't hold out for the i7 refresh. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Lower clocked and less shaders. Hmm.
How much will the DDR5 VRAM make up for that? -
Also less bandwidth, 128bit bus, which will choke the GPU at higher resolutions. the GDDR5 will help, but I don't think by enough to equat to the current 260m's power. However it should run significantly cooler.
-
It doesn't say anywhere in that article that it will be GDDR5. As far as we know, it could be GDDR3. I don't think Asus went with the 250m for thermal reasons but rather to meet a baseline cost. I hope they do decide to offer a higher end G60 that features a GTX 260m else they will be shooting themselves in the foot.
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Well, a G51vx user is unhappy with his temperatures, and you're unhappy with lessened graphics performance, maybe the two of you could switch.
Don't know how the MXM slots would like that, though. -
Switch to what? I already have a 260m gtx. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Hypothetically.
-
-
-
-
-
If it's GDDR5, the 128-bit bus is negated. See 4770 vs 4850 comparison as an example.
Yeah, I just read an article that read GT 240M. What gives? -
Oh my.. We really need some gddr5 clarification on all the new cards coming out haha. They never write it anywhere and it makes so much of a difference
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
If Ken Lee says it's a typo it probably is. I've exchanged emails with him, and he says it's supposed to be equipped with the GTX 260m.
-
dude not fair.....i want some mobile i7 power....
worth trying to huck my g71gx?
and any word on where this is gonna be sold? -
Yeah, if Ken says it is a typo, believe him.
Don't know the dates for this to come out, but considering that Dell, Clevo/Sager, and even HP also announced i7 notebooks, all should launch around the same time. -
Nope not worth getting rid of just for the i7. It won't make hardly any difference in games at native resolution since the bottleneck is the GPU. Better off waiting for DX 11 nvidia cards to show up. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
i7 with Radeon 5xxx or nVidia 3xx... now that's worth getting rid of the G71gx for.
-
So do the i7 processors cost about the same amount as the older core 2 duo ones do, or does $1200 for the G60j mean we're likely going to see other specs trimmed?
-
-
I would wait before getting an i7 notebook. And yeah the low i7 cost as much as the Q9000 approximately.
-
Unless you do a lot of rendering or encoding, the current generation of CPUs would be fine. The P9600 is more than powerful enough for majority of applications.
-
yea, if its 250m, that is a downgrade and makes me feel DAM HAPPY that im not missing out on anything too special. my g51, got at 1252USD, is quite good and when these i7 come out mainstream for all notebooks, i will buy a cheap Qx9300 and OC that *** outta it so that i can have competent system for the next 1-2years. i7 is good, but nothing worth me selling my laopt to get the J version. i really hope that is a typo btw...otherwise...WOW ASUS, WOW.
-
We know that the the Geforce GTS 250M is an underclocked GTS 260M, while the GTS 260M is a Geforce 9800M GT with DirectX 10.1 support and a 128-bit memory bus + GDDR5. The Geforce GTX 260M on the other hand is an overclocked Geforce 9800M GTX. Now seeing how the Geforce 9800M GT is about 20% slower than the Geforce 9800M GTX then something similar would apply. -
Lethal Lottery Notebook Betrayer
Wow at first when I saw i7 I was like oh thats epic, but then when I found out the graphics card was basically equal to the 9800m GTS I was like, no! The i7 is awesome but im not going to have worse game performance because of it. Maybe this is the BB model and the variants will have something even better than 260m! Seriously way better than Alienware's $1500 240m, what a joke. So its either the g51vx-x1a, wait for imac refresh, or wait for new asus i7 with a better GPU. Waiting is hard, im tempted to install xp on this macbook and play some old games.

I think the thread title should be changed, because people are confused here.
The G60J is a 16 inch notebook coming out with i7 and GTS 250M (By the looks of it..)
The GTS 250M is with the new architecture from nvidia and should provide excellent performance for the low power requirements it has. It isn't the same G92 core as the 9800M series or GTX 260M/280M. Whole new technologieIt will however be less performant than the GTX 260M.
The G51J is the G51 refresh coming out with i7. I highly doubt Asus would put anything lower than a GTS 260M in it, as the current one has a GTX 260M. It might also have a GTX 260M.
Side-note : The Alienware comes with standard GT 240M for people that want extra battery life. You can upgrade to a GTX 260M, and it isn't expensive. I think this new card just provide more choice for the AW users -
While I think 260M would have been a better move on ASUS part. From looking at the graph below, it looks like the i7 helps the graphics department by quite alot seeing as the clevo has a "2-GHz Intel Core i7 920QM CPU, 4GB of RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M GPU" and scores basiclly the same mark as the m17x which has a "2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad core CPU, 8GB of RAM, and two NVIDIA GTX 280M GPUs". While i'm not 100% sure what scores a G51 gets from a quick google my guess is around 11000 which is somewhat less then the G60j. If some one can confirm that score it would be great but at this point the g60j is looking like its going to come in perfect time to step in place of my aging G2P
SOURCE: HERE -
My M860TU with a P9600 and GTX 260M stock clocks does about 10300 points in 3dmark06, if it can give you an idea about the g51.
And yes the W860CU is impressive. Don't forget that 3dmark06 includes a CPU test also, so that score probably went up alot due to the cpu test. -
With a 28W of TDP, the GTS 250m draws merely a third of 260m GTX's power at full load (28W vs 75W); being essentially an efficient remake of 8800m GTX - eqipping GDDR5, it's not slow neither.
Comparing it to other high-end NV cards, I'd call it the sweet spot - in terms of performance per watt, and value; in a 15 incher, I'd take it over 260m GTX anyday. The fact is that Asus underclocked those 260m GTX in G51. Which proves that the laptop could do with less heat anyway; since its performance isn't quite on par with normal 260m GTX, a small drop in performance with 250m should be neligible anyway imo; as result of packing all the high powered parts into the laptop, if anything it certainly will release alot of heat, nor is the battery great.
At small expense of performance, but much less power usage and heat, 250m is a step-up in my book. -
-
The real world difference is pretty tiny. Sure there might be gap in synthetic benchmark, but it's more like 5% difference in most of the games, and upto about 10% in shader intensive games.
-
so does anybody know if you can at least fit a 260 gtx in? thanx.
-
Err... I think these Asus have their own proprietary GPU design, possibly soldered in - so its probably not possible.
There wont be much difference neither in performance. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Ever since Asus adopted the upside-down MXM 2.1 socket for the top shelf GPU's, they have been used in all of the recent G-series notebooks. Asus will most likely continue to use the proprietary MXM 2.1 format for the G92b until the mobile GT200 cards are released, which will require Asus to reverse engineer the MXM 3.0 format.
-
How are you coming up with a 5-10% difference between one card that has higher clocks, 256 bit bus vs 128 bit bus, cut down shaders and slower clocks? The "logic" is mind numbing--just comparing Gflops based on nVidia's numbers shows about 20%. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
I would be more concerned about the 300 series GT200 cards that will succeed the GTX 260M and GTX 280M rather than focus on these GTS cards. That is what is important right now. Don't let these GTS cards distract us from the real jackpot. They will be coming very soon, I can assure you.
-
I can't wait for those..hopefully they're here by Jan. Clevo W860CU + 300 series will be mine.
