See this is the main issue here with the sudden release of all this hardware and software (Windows 7). My G50Vt is gone and I need another powerful laptop very soon, but seeing how Core i7 is already coming out and now hearing of possible release of the Geforce GTX 300 series makes me question on when I should shop.

You can wait in the Q4 2010 boat with me. I already have my eyes on what I want, and it is going to be much more worth the wait than Christmas 2009 or H1 2010.
-
What exactly is coming Q4 2010?
-
is it 32nm fab. die? idk but i really would be waiting for nvidia 300 series, the ati 5000 series is really nice, from benchmarks, but we all know nvidia comes out with something that will be much more expensive but offer somewhat higher performance, aka 4870x2vs gtx 295...
but yea....this has relieved my heart. i bought this laptop like a month b4 the corei7 refresh and it would really make me feel bad that i didnt wait for it. now i know it has weaker gpu, im fine and happy for my laptop, especially at 626USD (lol i paid 1/2, my dad paid 1/2, total was 1252USD) -
It doesn't have a weaker GPU tho, not if ken from gentech is right, and he usually is.
-
yeah but guys, the i7 isn't that amazing, atleast for gaming, ive seen tons of benchmarks, and with a 260 or higher gpu, you gain zero performance boost from and i7 vs my 2.8 ghz core 2 duo, and probly a 2.53 ghz core 2 duo. I looked at tons of game benchmarks and the only gains were 1 fps per second... thats nothing when your playing games like me at Full HD, highest settings, and 8 x AA with over 100 fps...
-
the i7, or any quad for that matter, will be much more prominent in the future of gaming with more and more games being optimized for more than 2 cores. Take GTA IV for example. Play that game with a dual core CPU and a quad CPU and watch your FPS rise greatly.

Yea is this particular 250 better than the 260? If not I'm wondering if its being used to keep the heat down. It looks like the same chassis thus same cooling design.

It really amazes me how many people read the OP and then respond without actually reading the thread.
-
well some of us are a bit lazy...cough cough *everyone cept u + forge*.
well, i think my c2q is gonna be fine. on the bad note, i ran furmark and peaked at 102 C constant. what do you guys get on furmark? im noticing that my laptop is getting higher temps than before, l4d is 96 when propped up and 99C when sitting on a desk. my guess is that dust is accumulating? how often should you clean it? also what else can i do to fix the it back to *normal* temps of ~90-93C? -
I peak at 91C in furmark. Also, in your sig it shows you as way overclocked, that will also drive your temps up way high.

Future G-series owner here, just wanted to share this info...

some notes:
-only dd3? not gddr3
-blu-ray finally -
tyvm for confirming it IS a GTX 260m =D

Well its nice to see that Asus is still "keeping up with the Joneses".
However my 3 different (4 RMAs 3 DOA replacements) W90Vp-X1/X2 machines have me more than skeptical about jumping back into uncharted territory once again.
I'll stick to the proven Mobile Duo or Quads and leave the beta testing to someone else. I already did my beta testing for ASUS, and while I still think they are a stand up company I'd rather not get cut by the "cutting edge" a second time.
Hope those waiting for the new i7 models the best of luck, I'll enjoy what I can out of my G51-X1A in the meantime. -
o wow, dam now i feel bad. btw its overclocked to 570/870/1425 for those temps. i really need to know how to cool it back down. i envy you element, you have such a nice computer, great price/ and even greater temps. how did you get such godly temps? did you do ANY modding at all? do you clean out ur fans? what DO YOU DO!!?!?!
-
I didn't clean my fans yet ...and any overclocking, especially that extra 70mhz on your memory, will cause higher temps. Take it down to stock clocks, and try again.

(Zalman off, and I can't remember the exact ambient, but I think it's about 74 or 75) -
btw how much can dust really affect ur laptop temps? should i try cleaning it? there is no warranty void if you just clean out everything rite?
^ HOLY DAMFORGE HOW in the world did you get that? those copperblocks at work? those are at similar clocks to the ones i was getting 102C.
EDIT: redid furmark at stock clocks and reached 99C max, 98C stable for 450sec bench. now why is it that element gets 8C lower temps than me? he didnt mod anything? my ambient for that test was around 76-79F. do you clean out ur fans, element? i think i will try that this weekend. use a cotton swab + water and toothbrush? is that all? i thought you used compressed can of air to clean *** outta the fan by blowing compressed air into the fan intake? watever, will try lower temps 2morrow.
also...does underclcoknig to 400/640/1000 do anything detrimental to the integrity of the GPU? i will need to underVOLT to get lower temps rite? will a simple downclock lower my idle temps tho? is it safe to keep it at the 400/640/1000 as my stock temps when windows boots up? then when i game, i put it higher? thxs -

A combination of MX-3, copper shims, drilling, and lots and lots of copper. And I'm still not quite done yet.
I'm sure you'll get a respectable drop with just copper.
NOTE: Also, remember that I'm probably not running the same resolution you are. Try 1366x768 and see what you get. -

I don't think EIement's G51 is overclocked.
Your G51 should be more than capable of handling 550/1375/800 all day long. Why would you want to downclock that low to 400/1000/640? That's well over a 20% loss in performance. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Do you remove the entire heatsink for the removal? I'm getting weary of removing the whole damned thing and reapplying the paste every single time.
What I've done is just use a damp swab and blow "out" along the ran blades. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
I rip out everything on my notebook when I clean, haha. Full cleans usually take a little bit over half an hour for me depending on what songs I have on my playlist. If you blow out your radiators regularly, then you don't need to worry about removing the heatsink so you can scrub the radiator fins. The fan is what is most important. You will be surprised at how much powdered surface dust you will find after cleaning the fan blades and the turbine casing.
-
My GPU is currently not overclocked, but at 550/875/1375 I max at 91C. I actually need to OC most of the time to retain stable temperatures at all, because once my fans kick into max gear my temps plummet til my fans kick off, and then it heats up all over again.

You should show them the picture you PMed me. It's like a roller coaster.

Here's a preliminary test with some higher GPU clocks. The testing isn't accurate, though, since I undervolted my CPU to 1.250 and my ambient is a chilly 70F. No active fans, but the front of the notebook is propped up with two .45 bullet casings.
Pretty happy, if you don't mind me saying so. -
wasnt comparing with 2x0m.
As for gflop - MR 4850 supposingly has 880 of it. But 260M GTX just has 462, why do they have similar performance? its not exactly useful in indicating real term performance. -
Lethal Lottery Notebook Betrayer
Now seeing that the 16" Has such a low res I want the G51J, any word on availability and pricing?
-
Didn't like the lid paint, and it could have a ddr3 1333 like m60j but it's promising
-
it says on that asus press release that it "turbo charges" the processor from 1.73 to 3.06ghz.
what?
does it run the processor at 1.73ghz to save power then boost it to 3.06 when needed?
4x 3.06ghz is some desktop quality....
also the lid paint is horrid, and asus really needs to knock that **** off. I think (its just my opinion) that my g71gx from bestbuy with the one color, black, with the right amount of lights is aesthetically pleasing. -
the CPU clocks at 1.7GHz when all 4 cores are in use, OCs to 3GHz when 2 CPUs are in use, and iirc, goes a bit higher when only 1 CPU is in use. it does this automatically depending on threading of the application and amount of load applied.

Here's a good review by anandtech on the mobile i7's: http://anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3647
Essentially, if you're going to buy a DTR with high cpu performance in mind, get the ones that feature the i7-975 desktop version since it slaps the mobile version silly. Also, since the GTX 280 was the limiting factor in all but 2 games, the GTX 260m would be even more so thus gaming performance gains would be little to none. Even AT concludes that for gaming, quad core isn't worth it. -
1 core @ 3.06 GHz
2 cores @ 2.80 GHz
3 cores @ 2GHz
4 cores @ 1.73GHz
According to this review -
according to that, im much less impressed now with the turbo thing lol. still very useful, getting 2.8ghz core 2 power goin for non-quad programs.
theoretically, if one of the cores can be pushed to 3.06 (while all others are inactive given), do you think somone will be able to run enough juice and cooling through this thing to get all 4 cores runnin at 3.06? (lol) -
Would be nice if they at least allowed two case options for the G-series laptops along with the option to turn off the lights.
Edit: Though, as a "flashy" laptop, I actually kinda like the design. It's a pretty nice slick blue color, like a "sleek" laptop, but it's ripped down the middle where the Republic of Gamer logo is showcased. Out of the G-series designs so far, this one might be a new favorite. My current laptop is less than a month old and I'm already wanting to upgrade. -
look at the best buy g71gx, i think it got it right, the lights and color scheme are subtle but do the job enough to distinguish it. also you can disable all/any of the lights save the asus emblem on the back. the graphics on the lid make it look like a childrens toy.
-
I think there is at least 5 pages about cooling tips on the g51vx come on guys keep that where it belongs, good info but we want to know about the g60j
