Evening all,
I'm looking very seriously at these (virtually identical) laptops, but I'm stuck on one very, very important thing: I need desktop real estate. My primary use for this machine will be as a mobile development platform (I'm a comp sci student who games, not the other way around) and I play EVE Online primarily, which both hold pixels dearly. If I want to FPS game, I have my desktop (water-cooled Q6700 @ 3.8 w/ GTX 260s) to do that on.
So, with that said, here's what I propose:
I'm all for replacing the screen with the proper 1920x1080 panel, but we need the data on which one is the right one to get. So why don't we look up the part numbers of the existing LCD panels and send them into ScreenTek and see what they can tell us about which panels will fit? There must be a number of people interested in a modification like this- I just don't believe there's no demand for it among current owners.
Then, after one of us (probably me) orders and slaps one in to verify that it works, we should organize a group-buy and get decent pricing from some place - everyone wants a deal now and again. Can't hurt to have numbers.
Anyone interested in a(n admittedly slightly crazy) plan like this?

Sounds like a great idea but I am kinda iffy on the GTX 260 pumping recent games out on 1920x1080.

Actually this is what I have wanted to do. At least get a replacement screen for my G51-RX05 at better resolutions. Just didn't know where to start looking. I have already replaced a few things on my laptop, put in an X9100 extreme and also put in an SSD for my boot drive. This is the one thing left to make my laptop perfect to me.

You'd be very wrong se7in =] I get decent frames in Crysis (30FPS+ with the CCC mod on High) and 60FPS flat in a lot of other games, at 1080p with my X1A

Neugent, Se7in, if you guys could just take off the back lid and tell me what the make and model of your current screen is, I should be able to get the options for all g51/g60 users to upgrade to 1920x1080 panels and what the bulk cost would be. I'd really appreciate it!
Thanks,

I would be very interested in this as well. So if anyone figures it out; let me know!!!

Okay, got my (brand spankin' new) G60VX-RBBX05, replete with the 1366x768 panel. The viewing angles and contrast are kind of... yeah, the panel is about the only budget thing on the laptop for the $950 pricepoint.
I will take the thing apart fairly shortly and take a look at the panel to see who makes it and take detailed information on screw spacing to see if we can't find the right panel without needing a new bezel like the G51 people.
If everyone else can do the same, I'd love to be able to compare and make absolutely certain that when we give the public at large the "this panel will fit" we won't have people coming back and saying that theirs didn't. Measure twice, cut once.

I'd be interested too. I just made a thread about the poor viewing angles

Like you said, this is probably the main thing holding it back. I don't mind the resolution so much...just the viewing angles aren't good..
I mean just look at those comparison shots with my M1530..

Okay, I and two other users have confirmed their panels are the same. Now, we need good LCD panel resellers to match up the holes for us. Suggestions?

What happened to this thread?! It ended right when the important info was required, lol.

Thought this thread deserved a bump. I just bought a new g60vx myself, and was curious about the upgrade options for my screen.

Okay, sorry for the lengthy delay in any and all information, but it's mostly been bad news. It appears that it would take a new bezel AND new panel. The panel we can get about anywhere, but the new bezel would have to come from ASUS, as we'd be lifting the one from the higher-end models and retrofitting it into our current lid. It should, I repeat, SHOULD, be a drop-in, but anyone in this line of work will tell you that should is as good as "some modification necessary."
