My G71 overclocked very nicely to 15% with no issues, but I am looking for a way to make it stick at 15% all the time without having to reset and apply Turbo Gear every time I reboot.
I have looked in the bios and the options to use anything other than Turbo Gear are there but seem to be locked.
Thanks in advance.

Just go look in the guide I just posted (link in signature). It is intended for the Asus G51 but it'll work with the G71 without a problem.
You just have to find the Clock Generator for the G71 which should be easy with a quick search in the G71 threads. -
thanks for the suggestions! it has been a nogo trying to find the clock generator for the G71Gx, but I will keep digging.

IF you can't find it, it should be very easy to find by yourself. Just open up the laptop and look around inside. Look for the motherboard number.
-
binary, let me know if you ever find it!
-
You can try random PLLs (or make educated guesses like start with the G51's Clock Gen first) and see if they first get correct clocks and then whether they actually overclock. It may take a LONG time and alot of guessing but it should work unless SetFSB doesn't support the G71 yet.
-
spent three or four hours on it, and found many that will kinda work but none really work. After having to reinstall windows do to an issue with Disk CRC I gave up.
-
It might just be that the G71 is not supported by SetFSB and you need to contact the programmer and give him your motherboard information for him to update it next release. -
Well this is on hold for me right now, I am needing to send my Dell off to service and I will need this laptop in it's place...
-
I don't have to run turbogear everytime I boot... It stays overclocked on restarts and cold boots...
I'll double check though -
Mine doesn't, have to change the mode every boot.
-
had my hopes up there for a few...
The other thing I see it do it for reason it shows that is swaps back to standard clock speed when I run some games ( have not tested to make sure, but green box still bugs me...) -

Even if you overclock using setfsb or clockgen you will have to "re-overclock" each time you re-boot your laptop. Only a bios overclock remains permanent and laptops don't have such options in the bios, 95% of them don't anyway. If you find the PLL try to overclock after setting turbogear to its maximum 15% as the program often changes the voltages too which you cannot giving you a better chance in reaching even higher stable speeds. For example on my asus c90p without turbogear I can reach maybe 2.8ghz stable without turbogear but if I set turbogear to max 15% OC and then setfsb I can get max 3.15ghz stable from 2.4ghz stock. Massive difference
The PLL chip should be quite easy to find. Usually found near the ram slots or the processor it is quite a narrow but long (1inch) alumium thing that sticks up a few millimetres so quite visible. Along the top of it the PLL code is printed. Look at some examples on the PLL list on setfsb to get an idea of what you are looking for. Then select the closest to what you have. -
Edit: bah...I meant task scheduler -

Still though omitting turbo gear may be detrimental to the maximum overclock that can be achieved.

Hello,
I'm new to this forum. Please forgive my ingnorance of forum rules if I violate it with this post. Just disassembled my asus G71GX-RX05 from BB. The PLL for my laptop is 9LPRS929AKLF. I tried it with SETFSB and it allowed me to overclock to 2.92. Hope this helps all the other G71 owners.

What's the highest stable clock possible with this laptop? I just ordered mine and I'm waiting for it to come in so I can't mess around with it yet...

I DECLARE THEE NECROMANCER.
Your highest overclock will depend on the quality of your CPU. Some people can overclock just barely, others can go to extremes. You'll have to see for yourself. -
hey great job! now i don't have to open my brand new comp! ha ha
-
umm well just put nthat into my setfsb on my g71 and it says my speed is only 2650 or something in cpu-z... i set fsb to 2.8 with that number. so i am not so sure now.

Using CrystalCPUID and SetFSB Im currently working on 3Ghz+ right now.
