Some sites have the G71G listed with WiMax on the specs. Mine doesn't have it. Anyone else? Is this another item that didn't make the final product?

The G71G units sold in North America don't have WiMax.

WiMAX service (aka Sprint XOHM 4G) doesn't exist unless you're in Portland, Oregon... it hasn't yet been launched... the Portland OR deployment is a beta

Edit: M50Vm-A1WM is the only ASUS laptop currently shipping with WiMAX (suffix WM for WiMAX) that I can find

    - another discrepancy on specifications? I buy computer equipment based on the specs provided. This is not making me happy.

Maybe those websites are in different countries? ASUS has different model configurations in different countries.

That's entirely possible.. just like my G50V was advertised as having a RJ-11 jack and it doesn't in the USA. In Europe it does. Regardless, wimax hasn't been deployed, so it's a non issue for most people unless they're in portland, oregon... or plan on paying for Xohm service in the future rollout, which will not be for months. Laptop will be outdated by the time the service is avail.

Wrong Answer... Portland was NOT the first city for the roll out of Xohm/WiMax Baltimore was. Xohm is being sold in the local malls and other locations. In fact, I have a Xohm Brochure sitting 2-3 feet from me. In it, it states every Monthly Xohm subscriber gets a homepage, email, calendar, chat accounts powered by Google. Also inclluded is a 5GB Xohn Locker "to store your stuff", and McAfee Privacy Service Software.

P.S. Xohm has been in the local area for a while, I do not remember when I first started hearing about it. I just didn't know a thing about it and was leary about it. Now that I know Sprint/Nextel is involved I am even more leary about it. Sprint Nextel lost my account 5 times before I canceled with them. I was transfering a company phone into my name, they jacked up the activation charge the on my fifth time trying to get the account transfered and then insisted additional money was not added to the price and the price was the same all along! Thats why I left them. 1 year corporate, never got satisfaction then they screw up accounts 5 times and jack up the price. Should I risk involvement in Xohm with Sprint being a major player in it? I don't know, but the reported speeds make it tempting anyway!

Yes you are correct there were earlier tests in various metro areas... Philly, D.C., Chicago, Baltimore... Portland was the official launch as far as I understand. It coincided with the ClearWire agreement being finalized...
