I'm really leaning towards this one, and I have a question. (The Core 2 Duo model, not the Quad)

How far can you overclock the CPU to? I think Quadzilla said 2.9 GHz! But man, that seems crazy high. I remember the older G50 (X6) from newegg OCing to 2.7 or something close.

Can you seriously overclock it to that? If not, what?

    I'd really appreciate it. :p

Thats pretty much the last thing are thinking about if they own the G71 RX05. As of right now just getting it to game is the goal.

Using the TurboGear feature at 15% which is the max setting, it hits 2.89GHz.

Yes, I know about the problems. But it would take 10 seconds for someone to check. Right not there's nothing G71 owners can really do, it's an Asus-fix as far as I'm concerned.

    Thank you!

    It's alright. :p

But yes, I know. I'm in the same boat as you are, I'm itching to pick it up but refuse to until this whole deal is dealt with. I just hope it doesn't take too long.

I didnt even realize it was on their site now, cool stuff just saw it here - http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...1?skuId=9366615&type=product&id=1218092150740

The overclock tends to be limited by the ram, my highest overclock with my ram is 306 from 266 on the bus. So lets say my ram was on your G71 then by my highest fsb overclock you would get 2.9Ghz out of it. In theory you you could crank 3.15 out of it but, its likely not going to happen.

and uh 82 degrees on what? cpu would be hot, gpu thats ice cold in the laptop world, even if you meant 92 thats normal for say a G50VT-A1, G51 however has been exceeding that.

On a side note the review of this model on best buy are less then stellar(they complain about heating/freezing problems.)

Yes, I know. It's plagued by that underclocking to virtually nothing issue. I'll wait till that is fixed.

I know, but I wanted a clean answer, not another one in the many cluttered threads around here. I really don't think one more thread in the sea of hundreds matters much, does it?

It doesn't come with an asus warranty but with a BB warranty. Don't know whether the BB warranty will cover international though

^ actually, I just "bought" one (store cred from accidental warranty) and customer service and geek squad both said I can send it to asus to be fixed if there is a problem. It's a choice where you take it to from what I understand. Same with my gateway, they said I could have sent it to them if I had wanted.

You could call asus or email them to double check and also see if its the 2 year.

I think its a 1 yr asus warranty....u could take it to BB but asus would be the safest/smartest route.

would it be too much to ask for somebody to detail the bios problem/solution for me?
something about the gpu capping off at 82 degrees or something?
i am thinking about buying this laptop so any info on potential pitfalls would be fantastic

it caps off at 82* and gives a massive underclock. With a bios update, this will not happen. I do not think anyone has throttled the GPU passed 100* though.
