I got my G71GX from BB yesterday and I applied the BIOS update through asus liveupdate and all was working fine in terms of playing games but then now my GPU randomly underclocks itself for no apparent reason. I applied the bios patch, went to the bios and hit use default settings and am running it in overclock mode. The weird part is that the GPU temp is between 70-80 C whenever this happens. Did I apply the patch wrong? If so how do I fix it?

I don't think you applied the patch wrong. If the BIOS update would have been misinstalled your computer would most likely be a brick (or at least not showing an image).

You could try to cleanly remove and reinstall the GPU drivers. Maybe they got confused by the changed behavior of the GPU before and after the BIOS update.

hmm how would I go about doing that? Would installing any driver than the one that came with the laptop do it?

Well you could try the latest nVidia mobile drivers, or modded drivers.

But as a start just use the drivers on the CD, or the latest drivers on the ASUS support website.

Search for and install Driver Cleaner Pro.
Uninstall the GPU drivers from the control panel.
    Reboot in safe mode.
Run Driver Cleaner Pro, activate all filters related to nVidia, and run it (interface should be selfexplanatory).
    Reboot.
    Install new drivers.

I've experienced this same issue with my G71GX-RX05 from Best Buy. I think I know why this is happening. Did you put your computer into sleep mode after playing any of your games and then wake and tried to play a game?

This issue never happens to me as long I don't put the computer into sleep mode and wake and play games. If I turn off sleep this is a non-issue. I'm using stock drivers however.

I hope that Asus releases an update or it is indeed driver related.

I didn't try the drivers yet but sleep mode causes it? I'm starting to lose faith in asus now, I mean we can't use hibernate and now we can't sleep? Where's the portability?
