When my screen saver has been on for a while and I move my mouse to get back into my computer it goes to sleep instead. If I push the power button the logon screen pops up and it's ready to go, but it's still a little annoying. I just wanted to see if anyone else had this issue or a solution.
I've been doing some video encoding and I guess this has a little something to do with my problem because it's preventing sleep mode, but in anycase, I know it's not "supposed" to work like this.

1. Did you install Power4Gear?
2. Did you check which power profile you are using and what the advanced settings for it are?
3. What OS are you running Win7 or WinVista? -
I haven't installed Power4Gear. Guess I will and see what happens but it shouldn't go to sleep when I move the mouse in any case. Running Vista 64-bit.

Guys, I have a similar problem and will check if the installation of Power4Gear will fix it. bmcassagne, did it fix your problem?
Renegade, you seem to know about your Asus and I've got a couple of questions for you. We've got the similar system, though it seems you have upped your RAM to 12GB. And the copper sink and those extra's I don't have. And I still have Vista 64bit Home Premium. Will soon order that W7 upgrade.
Here are my questions:
1. The sleep mode. Well, my issue is that on startup my laptop sometimes just randomly goes into sleep mode for up to 5 times. Sometimes never. I have disabled all sleep settings and it still happens. Have no idea what is causing this! Vista?
2. Do you also get double typing of letters every now and then? Actually sometimes very seldomly? Some guy on the Asus forums mentioned it's a bios thing.
3. I did experience stuttering in my games about 2 to 5 mins into the games and after getting Vista SP2 that didn't get fixed. What seems to have fixed it was updating of my bios to 1704 and ensuring I've got the latest drivers. Holding thumbs that I won't experience this again. The long fix for me if this happens, is to restart my computer (and then the sleep mode stuff don't happen again). It's only on initial startup.
4. My idle GPU temps are around 55 to 65C and some games push it up to 98C! Should I be worried? I'm using TechPowerUp GPU-Z to check the temps.
5. Lastly, what games do you play on your system? I would like to share experiences on graphics, etc with fellow Asus G71Gx-A1 users.
Mind the long post! -
@Wulff
1. I haven't had too many sleep related issues other than the downclocking of the GPU on wakeup. I went into the power options and modified my setting so that the laptop would got go into sleep mode when running on AC. Are you sure your laptop is going into sleep mode or is there something more sinister, like possibly some component not being seated correctly? Just playing devil's advocate. It may be Vista, I just skipped vista completely. Have you tried any other operating systems, e.g Linux or an older Windows OS?
2. I normally do not use the keyboard on the laptop as I have it set on a cooler and have a usb keyboard and mouse attached. I did notice that I had to press a little harder than usual on some keys to get them to register, but that might be due to the fact that I was typing fast and didn't depress the keys completely. I have never had the double typing issue.
3. I experience the stuttering too with older nvidia drivers and ran stock for a little while. I then switched to Dox's drivers for a couple of months and then most recently switch back to the stock notebook drivers (195.62 which are WHQL certified). The 1704 bios is supposed to help with WHQL certified drivers failing and I have had no negative side-effects since I upgraded. Try also running Guru3D's DriverSweeper to clean off all NVIDIA driver related content and then try reinstalling the new drivers after reboot.
4. As my sig says my GPU max's out at around 85C and I have yet to pass 90C. 98C is definitely kinda high and I would recommend investing in a good notebook cooler like the NZXT Cryo Lx. My idle temperatures are in the same ball park as yours. What games are you playing that are pushing the temperature that high? Also when I bought the laptop, I had XoticPC put AS5 on both the CPU and the GPU, so I wouldn't void my warranty but have additional cooling.
5. I play a number of games. Here is a list of the ones I have that I play off and on currently.
-Crysis
-Left 4 Dead
-Left 4 Dead 2
-Wolfenstein
-Dragon Age: Origins
-Borderlands
-TF2
-The Witcher: Enhanced Edition
-Trine
-Torchlight
-Need for Speed: Shift
-Mirror's Edge
-COD4
-Batman Arkham Asylum
-Risen
I usually run my games on all high settings with 4xAA at 1680x1050 (limitation of my LCD). If you want me to post screenshots, I can.
Here's what I would recommend:
1. Try installing and configuring Power4Gear to disable Sleep related options for normal running conditions when plugged in.
2. Get your laptop checked out to ensure that everything is well seated by you local/closest ASUS repair shop.
3. Put one of the following thermal compounds between you CPU/GPU and the cooling apparatus. These are listed in order of preference. IC Diamond 24, IC Diamond 7, Arctic Cooling MX-2, Arctic Silver 5.
4. Invest in a good notebook cooler.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask or shoot me a PM and I will do my best to answer it (based on my experiences, at least)

I'm on Windows 7 now and I'm not having the issue anymore. I think I am having a problem with the GPU downclocking though, or something like that. I notice it most when I'm playing Force Unleashed, but sometimes while playing other games too, like Fallout 3.
I think it's downclocking. I'll be playing and the game just gets extremely slow. Restarting the game doesn't help. The only thing that helps is rebooting. More frequently with Fallout 3 though, it just locks up and I have to close it with the task manager. But when this happens it will let me just restart the game and play fine without rebooting. I notice if I have programs running in the background it locks up a lot more frequently, but doesn't seem to affect the downclocking issue. I think the lockups are cause by the CPU.
I do have a notebook cooler but even without it I don't think I've seen GPU temperatures over maybe 85 if that much. That's running 1920x1200 with 4xAA on Fallout 3. -
with fallout 3, that is a common issue with any system, it has random lockup issues, and restarting the game will fix it. The other games might be an issue with sleep. Iirc, with the G71 series there is a downclocking issue where if the laptop goes into sleep mode, and comes out, it will downclock again after the GPU hits 83C. (this is the "fix", previously you didn't have to put it to sleep for this to happen)
