I apologize in advance for posting yet another question/issue regarding the G71 fan noise, but I have spent hours searching high and low for anyone who can answer my questions, or who may be having the same issues as me.
I bought my G71GX-RX05 from Best Buy back in August. I hadn't had any problems with the fan or fan noise that entire time. Starting last night the fan was running incredibly loud and has been ever since. At first I thought that the problem was with the fan -- that something had gone wrong with the fan. After researching further, and using HW Monitor and some good-old Minnesota cold, I may have discovered otherwise.
I now believe that the fan didn't get suddenly louder, but instead that previous to last night, the fan ran with such infrequency I barely noticed it. Now, it takes the aforementioned Minnesota cold to help me troubleshoot. Using HW Monitor I found that even when the GPU was running at 55 C, the fan was running. (And as far as speed and sound level, there appear to only be 2: fan on, and fan off -- and when on, it is loud. Annoyingly loud.) So, I went onto my three-season porch and shut down my laptop. After about an hour, I booted the laptop up again. The fan had finally shut off!!! I pulled up HW Monitor and waited. The GPU was at 40; the processors were at 30. I sat and watched and waited. The GPU temp rose steadily and within a few minutes, upon hitting 52, there it was again... the fan noise so loud I can barely stand to use the laptop anymore. I repeated the process a second time, and got the same results.
So my questions:
1 Anyone else having a similar problem?
2 The problem seems to be my fan; but is the problem that my fan suddenly got noisier? Or is my fan for some reason now suddenly kicking in at a low GPU temperature?
From everything I've read, the GPU in the Best Buy G71 is pretty much always going to be operating at this level or higher; and that heats in the 80s are not unheard of. In the 4 months that I've had the laptop, I've played Dragon Age, Prototype, Dead Space, and Crysis; and that entire time I don't ever remember hearing ANY fan noise.
Please, please, please help me anyone if you can!!! I am prepared to RMA this to ASUS, but I don't want to be without the laptop for any extended period of time, especially if they are going to return it to me and say that it is operating within acceptable parameters.
Is there anything I can do to fix the issue? I've tried finding a utility that allows me to access fan settings, but it appears I am out of luck.
Thanks all!!!

It is an issue with the fan. I had a similar issue with my G71 where the fan suddenly ran extremely loud and made very noticeable vibrations through the entire laptop while not experiencing any overheating issues. I would suggest you call asus, explain your situation and kindly ask them to ship you a fan replacement. If you're not comfortable replacing the fan yourself, you can ship your unit to Asus and have them do the replacement at their expense.

Thanks David. I called ASUS, and they won't ship me a new fan to install myself. They say they need the system in to troubleshoot to determine that it is indeed the fan that is the problem. I don't mind too much since the system is under warranty. They are picking up the bill for shipping. And besides, I've also been experiencing the frustrating double-type issue. So hopefully they can take care of that as well. But again, thanks for your help. Hopefully upon its return it will be better than new.

hi
i am having the same problem with my g71. were you able to fix your problem? now i am searching for a fan replacement but couldn't find any stores to buy g71gx fan. do you have any suggestions ? -
If you are still under warranty (I was), you're going to have to send it in - or bring it in to Best Buy (assuming you bought at Best Buy). The difference between the two options is cost and speed. Best Buy will be free for you, but will take 2-3 weeks. Otherwise, I got Asus to send me a shipping label, and bought a "laptop box" at FedEx/Kinkos for like $10 and shipped it to them for free. I had it back within a week.
I am not very happy with them though, as while they replaced the fan and I am back to quiet running, the decided to ignore the fact that I had also said that I was having the double-type issue. It was on the service order, but they didn't bother fixing it. I may have to send it back in again. It is driving me NUTS!!!
If you are outside of warranty, I'm not sure what your options are. I'd start by contacting ASUS. I would think they'd ship you a replacement part.
