    hey all,

ive been lurking for a few hours looking at everything i can find about this laptop.

the only thing i cant find out is this:

    is the processor/graphics card upgradable?

for instance, i am looking at the dual core model, could i, at a later point when they are cheaper, buy the quad-core extreme and fit it?

could i fit a 9800 range gfx to replace the 9700m gt?

    many thanks

    Leigh

The G71 already has a 9800M GS. The CPU can be replaced with a QX9300, however it will void your manufacture warranty.

on meshcomputers.com and everywhere else i have been it says that the G71V has the 9700M GT (512mb) card.

I dont mind about manufacturers warranty when it runs out :p

Sorry.. my mistake... Yes, the G71V has the 9700M GT, but the newer G71G has the 9800M GS. Either way, it probably isn't viable to replace the 9700M GT with a 9800 GPU since Asus GPUs are proprietary and they don't sell them individually.

    Fair enough :)

the deal im looking at at the moment is from meshcomputers, its the G71V, with free bag and mouse, 2 year cover, and a free 8gb usb memory stick for £1324 inc VAT and Postage.

is this a good deal? it seems the fairest out of anything ive seen for it so far

I don't think that will work since the chassis for the G1 is totally different from the G50.

I picked my G71V up for just over £1000 but that was a few months back and the exchange rate has taken a nose dive since then causing the price to shoot up.

The only thing extra that mesh are throwing in is the 8GB USB pen, all the other stuff comes as standard with the G71V (bag, mouse, 2yr cover)

You can change the CPU to a quad core, if you can find the chip, but I dont thing the graphics is upgradable as the BIOS for it is in the system BIOS rather than a separate one on the GPU card. If you find the QX9300 chip going cheap that is not an ES version let me know as I would love to fit one to my G71V.

i believe i get cover from mesh as well as Asus, so i get double insurance :p

Would you say thats a good price? its from within the UK (mesh is a uk based company)

The 9700M GT, is the BIOS flashable to the GTS?

i understand its trickier to overclock aswell but it is possible?

No, the BIOS is stored on the motherboard BIOS. This means you are stuck with the card that comes with the laptop OR doing major work in hacking the BIOS to take a different card.

If you were after the Quad core chip in the same PC then Insight do it for about £1761 ( http://uk.insight.com/apps/productp...earch=C=102&S=1015&M=ASU&lang=en-gb&K=&SB=phl).

Overclocking the 9700mGT is a pain, I personally have not managed it as Asus seem to have locked out all the overclocking options and none of the tools will even detect it properly under Vista 64 which I run.
