I just purchased and installed a new blu-ray drive from ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220535980815&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

HL CT10N Blu ray Player Drive

It shows up as a BD-ROM drive in my computer however it doesnt detect any of the Blu-ray disks I have tried. I have the current blu-ray playing software power DVD9.

DVDs and CDs work fine. I have the latest bios and everything is up to date. I tried the windows 7 troubleshooter but It didnt find a problem.

You have to buy PowerDVD or WinDVD with Blu-ray support. There are others that cost less but these are the big ones.

I have this same issue on my G51. I installed that same ct10n drive and it recognized it perfectly. I didn't try a blu ray until last week because I just assumed it worked and it was reading regular Dvd's properly. I tried latest WinDvd and POwerDvd with blu ray support and nothing works. Must be something about the system Bios that won't let it read Blu ray discs. I checked and the drive firmware is up to date.

Weird thing is, I downloaded the Blu ray rady check software from PowerDvd and it said everything checked out and that my system was 100% ready for blu ray.

    Who knows...

That's interesting. It worked right out of the box for me. It does spin up and try to read it, right?

Exactly what version of PowerDVD do you have? Have you downloaded all the updates? The inexpensive software I referenced above wouldn't work until I downloaded the latest updates.

    Cheers,

The disk spins but nothing happens. I have the latest updates to all software including the new G72GX Bios. I dont understand why it wouldnt work seeing as there are G72GXs with that same drive installed as standard.

    Thanks.

Hmmm, I know someone who has one of these. I'll try to get one of my blu-ray drives to him and the software to run it and have him test. He may not be available until the 15th but it would be interesting to try since I was about to pickup one of these G72s for $750 and it must work with BR.

    Cheers,

Do you have PowerDVD 9 Deluxe or Ultra? My co-worker has deluxe and it does not recognize Blu-ray; Cyberlink said he must upgrade to Ultra.

His machine recognizes the drive but he does not have any software. He can play DVDs. Sounds like yours doesn't even get that far. We won't be in the same city to try again until the 15th. If you machine sees the drive in the bios, it's got to be something we're missing (unless it's just bad).

I also realized the drive I gave him was one of my HP BR drives. My CT10N is installed in my G50VT.

    Cheers,

My drive shows as a Blu-Ray drive and plays dvds and cds just fine. Just wont play or detect Blu-ray as I understand it they use different lasers.

He can download trial software that will play blu-rays, does he have a disk to try out? it should detect it atleast right?

Can you see the Blu Ray disc in Windows' Explorer? It should at least show up in there, let you browse the files on the disc, even if playback's not working.

If you have a newer version of Nero installed, you could run the drive check utility (I don't remember the name off the top of my head) that they have in there to see what media is supported by your drive. Just a thought...

Thanks for the report - what laptop do you have though? A G72GX or another?

True - problem is that with some drives people are getting from China on eBay - well you know what I mean - sometimes they hack the software/hardware to make the drive appear to be able to do things it can't. Such as the 16GB flash drives that looked ok until you actually tried to use all that space and then you discovered they were actually only 1 or 2 GB. So it's safest in this case to make sure someone is running a Blu-Ray disc in HD to confirm it works :).

    Thanks,
    Peter

Looking into it more and thinking about it more I'm thinking I'd rather have a burner as well - 25-50 GB on a single layer disc is just too tempting :p.

I hear GBW-T10N is the same sort of drive but a burner, so that might be a good place for me to start.

    Thanks,
    Peter

here's the link to the drive on directron's site:

    http://www.directron.com/ct10n.html

it was the best price i could find at a store that had it in stock. i ordered it yesterday and paid a boatload for overnight shipping. normally, i would never do such a thing, but i'm leaving on monday for a looooong work trip. i figured the blu-ray drive would come in handy. :)

i attached a screenshot just to show how the drive appears in device manager.

oh man, don't tell me things like this!!! now i want one!!!
