So I recently picked up the G72GX package that came with the laptop, razor mouse, and laptop backpack carry case. ( ASUS G72GX A1 - Core 2 Quad Q9000 2 GHz - 17.3" TFT and other Notebook Computers at CDW.com)
It's a pretty nice laptop but I keep having overheating issues which causes stuttering of video in games.
The biggest culprit is Left 4 Dead 2. I have everything maxed out and get decent FPS but usually after playing for 20 minutes the temps skyrocket and the game becomes completely unplayable. I have to exit the game, reboot, then relaunch the game and I get another 20 minutes before my FPS drops to 2-3.
It also happens in WoW with everything set to Ultra. The game will begin to freeze up on me, my whole interface disappears like I pressed Alt+Z and then it comes back on its own.
I ran CPUID Hardware Monitor and it's showing my GPU at 85 at idle. I don't have any of the overclocking software running. It's basically set to factory for everything. All I did when I got it was format it, install my copy of Windows 7 Enterprise 64, and then put all the programs I need for work as well as all the games I like to play.
What do I need to do to fix this problem?
Here's a screenshot of the CPUID Hardware Monitor. I put my desk fan on the back where the fans are blowing and from what you can see in the screenshot, it dropped the GPU a couple of degrees. I'm not sure why my temps are so high at idle.

PS I'm using the driver off the asus website (8.15.11.8619 6/11/2009) I tried downloading the latest Nvidia driver and used mobility modder but it broke custom resolutions and I could not get the laptop to work properly with my 32" LCD TV which I use for a monitor. The only version of the driver that I could find that works properly with my TV is the one from the asus site. Could it be the driver causing overheating issues?

so i was curious how bad the temps got and loaded Left 4 Dead 2 and this is how it looks after the game is running for 5 minutes

Is the g72gx compatible with Asus AI Suite? It has features and throttle controls to keep hardware running at certain temps. Also, check out PC Probe to monitor heat and voltage usage

I would try a different driver, I do remember something about certain nvidia drivers causing overheating problems.

Hey OP, go to NVIDIA & Laptop News | Latest NVIDIA drivers and related news | laptopvideo2go.com and download the latest Nvidia driver and the modified INF file. Reinstall drivers using new ones.
If that does not help then something is physically wrong with the laptop. The G72GX only uses one fan to cool both the CPU and GPU and based on your CPU temps the fan would seem to be working going on how cool the CPU is...so something is wrong with the GPU cooler. Its either loose or not attached properly (dont see how this is possible but it can happen).
I have a G72GX and it DOES NOT run that hot. Like I said, try the newest drivers, if that doesnt work than try RMA'ing if you can.
