    G72GX ATI 5870HD

Hello all My First post but have been reading for some time now, Great Knowlegable people here. :)

I bought my Asus G72 GX Bestbuy rbbx 09 with the quad core 260GTX and thought this was the G73 of the time Bang for the buck then and if i knew about the G73 i would have waited.

Anyhow i already own this one and i'm still happy with and will use it for awhile and maybe get the AW M17 r2 when issues are fixes or the G73 this summer?
I have been able to over clock the Q9000 Cpu to 2.2 Ghz Stable along with the 260M OC to Stock 550/950/1375 Clocks and play COD4 for several hours with the rear Propped up an inch and it cools just fine in a 68 degree without any throttleing or crashing

I have recently Dropped in a X9100 Core 2 extreme Cpu 3.06 and OC that to 3.1 with 550/950/1375 Hooked up to my 50" Plasma And got a 6000 3d mark Vantage score.. Seems decent for this machine

Ok i have just done a teardown of the laptop to redo the Thermal past to ICD and took many Pics of the board and video card it even says G71MXM on the card lol But yea I know that many may Curse the Reverse MXM due to Upgrade but I have it and if the G73 has it too

    http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/7524/img0262g72breversemxmca.jpg

Cool new upgrade path for the G72 Maybe? Of coarse cooling and support aside.

Maybe If I can get my hands on one of the cards Would love to try.. :D

Good job man, perhaps we can get some confirmation on the 5 series GPU, and hopefully, theres a small chance of it actually working! :D.

nice, yeah i've that problem, people have nailed it really down to ram tollerance, the q9000 is capable of a lovely 2.8ghz, as seen in the asus W90 mad overclock sessions haha.

Why OC so little? push that x9100 to 3.6 ghz. GPU should be stable up to 600/950/1450

Haha, but take your time getting there, always remember that! never go for a direct clock to clock OC, play it safe and slow. :)

Ahh Yes i know this is for Playable long term clocking.
I have tried 600/950/1450 with the Q9000 W/Mild OC and Get The Freeze So cooling capacity is limiting with the single fan.
    for benching
I do Push this machine hard and try the limits and I will be testing the X9100 Though ES to see what the pair can do?

"Haha, but take your time getting there, always remember that! never go for a direct clock to clock OC, play it safe and slow. "

Yes i have found that out that hard way I got in small steps and even then at times have has the first step lockup on me When Cold it seems so i let it warm up a little before.

I do have a Zalman NC2000 But this laptop seems to run best overall when Propped up in the rear.

With the cooler it shows super low temps but the airflow to parts of the board and memory chips do not get the flow that comes with the fan spinning on high then I can remove the cover and place it directly on the cooler and try super clocking it lol

I want to see the limit and do what Mandrake done with his M17X to this Laptop  this being this model lost all attention to the New G73 Which looks Awesome!

Haha do it man, you could also attempt a flash to 280m gtx (but thats a risk you DONT have to take!)

Mandrakes done some mad stuff, i think he had a qx9300 running at 4ghz per core..Thats like a guiness world record score haha.

    On a laptop...

Was a 280GTX Reverse MXM made? If so i would also do it.
think they were only MXM 3.0?

All yes that Q9300 is a Beast! 4gb per core is Sick and M17 has Much better cooling too doubt it would pass 3 for long in this laptop unless i under clock the Gpu then maybe?

Just waiting for a Dropped/Damaged parted out G73A1 :D on here or E-bay

Maybe i misunderstood Flash the current card? Is that possible or Flash support to the MB I'm Guessing, Would still need a Reverse MXM version still then,

The 260 and 280 are physically different cards. Just up the clocks on the 260.

There still both based off the g92 core, effectively making the same, with either more or less shader units/cores/thingies (Ok i guessed, but i bet thats fairly accurate.)

Im sure the Moo did suceed with the flash!

Interesting, Yes maybe some Cuda cores etc are crippled for the lower card ETC Cool either way.

Back to the Origional Intent of this Thread I would like to have somone Stop Benching and gaming on thier Spanking new G73 and Take out the 5870 card take some Photos or Better yet Send it to me :D :D :D

But Yes I would love to know is the 260MGTX physically the Same as the 5870HD that's the One to know??

Worst case, they changed the version :( then case closed.

But we will see and if i can do this then i will push it hard and share the info here..

Has anyone or reseller that may have opened the G73 seen or handled an ATI 5870 card?
Possibily while Doing an upgrade on the Thermal paste ETC?

I know the G73 is still new so if so very few have but just looking for the MXM version, reverse 2.1 or 3.0 ? or maybe somthing different?
If so that would be great.

OK Folks I have Found the Unfortunate answer to my Own Question While Reading the Alienware m17xr2 threads of them wanting to take a G73 and swap the 5870 for a 4870 cards to upgrade a m17.

It was found the G73 Uses Reverse MXM 3.0 Type B
The G72 Used reverse MXM 2.1 Bummer :(
would have been fun to try. but not possible.

    Case closed. pls kill thread.
