I own an Asus G51 (from best buy) and after I play a game (even only up to 10 minutes) I check the max temperature of my GPU using CPUID Hardware monitor the max temperature is anywhere from 90-98 degrees Celcius. Now this seems a little high to me. Ive spoke to two representatives from Asus over the phone and one was concerned about the temperature and told me try again and call back it occurs (which it did). So I called back and got someone else who told me that if the temperature is too high then the computer would automatically shut down, but it didnt really seem like she knew what she was talking about.
So I was just wondering if anyone gets temperatures this high or if this is normal, or if this can damage my GPU in the long run.
Some side information I do use a cooling pad wile playing games and it still reaches the temperature. The games I usually play are Crysis Warhead, Borderlands and Prototype. My CPU (Core 2 Duo) runs at a reasonable temperature 60-70 degrees Celcius. Also I am under warranty I've only had this laptop for about 2-3 months.
Please if anyone can -shed some light.

Asus G51 is known to run hot, this is nothing new, but most have been fine regarding this situation. If you dont feel comfortable at those temps, there are options like undervolting, copperblocks, hole/fake vent replacement, etc. Not all games take it to 90C+, but crysis does.

Thanks for the reply,
my main concern is that the longevity of my computer.
I want my computer to be able to last for many years, and I dont want the high temperatures degrading the GPU. -

Max temperatures doesn't tell the whole story, though. Install EVGA Precision so you can monitor your temperatures in real time. And don't forget to give us your ambient temperatures.
And those temperatures make me squirm. -
Unfortunately the G51's cooling is not adequate for the 260m gtx. That's why Asus underclocks it from the factory but that still does not work for many. If you are hitting 96C at stock speeds, then you need to consider doing the above mentioned mods. The best one would be the panel mod but that means you need to obtain a spare panel and those are hard to come by due to supply issues.
So your immediate recourse is to check out the copper mod thread that forge started, read through it, buy some copper blocks and place them on the heat sink. That should help lower your load temperatures by 3-5C. A cooling pad doesn't really help with load temperatures from my experience. -
Nice sig change Joker, grats bro going to darkside (sager), i though you were going 17'' , hope you still come to visit us on the hot runing asus forums.

Of course, I'll remain in AGO and visit these forums just as much as before. I got the 15.6" because the 17" seemed to have wasted space and the display didn't get as favorable of a review as the 15.6". Plus I figured the smaller 8690 would be more portable which is what I need. -
My GTX 260m in my new G60vx runs at 82c playing Crysis. Most games it stays under 78c. This is even after the fact that I upgraded the cpu to a T9600 2.8ghz. I am also running my 260m at true Nvidia stock clocks not the underclocks that Asus has them set to. The G60vx uses the same cooling system as the G51. Maybe you need a nice notebook cooling pad. If I use my NZXT Cryo the temps drop by another 4-6 degrees.

lol 82c.
Anything i play, my fans dont kick on until 94. It's weird, I sit here and watch it hit 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94-BOOM FANS GO. Whats up with that? -
