Now I know the HD5870 in the G73JH is a better card but I'm curious how much better for gaming.
A G51 with a T9600 @ 2.8GHz, 4GB DDR2 RAM and a 1GB GTX 260M @ 1366x768 res
vs
a G73JH with I7 @ 1.6GHz, 8GB DDR3 RAM and a 1GB HD5879 @ 1920x1080 res.
If they both had the same resolution screen, then I'm sure the difference would be more significant but how much better would the G73JH be when the resolution's much higher?
My G51 is currently in for repairs and as much as I like it I'm kinda tempted to upgrade...

You can get the g73 (05 edition) with the 1600x900 resolution and 6 gig of ram at BestBuy for $1199.
-
Yeah I know. That's another option and is what made me really consider the G73. However, I still consider biting the bullet and paying more for the A2 as an option too.
-
With the native resolution of 1600x900 you'll get better performance. I've heard that there might be performance issues running in DX11 mode, but I don't know much about that.
-
Just lower down the frame rates if a game can't play in 1080P
-
The 5870 is far better than the 260GTX but.......the 260GTX is still a great card.DX11 is really enticing and for $1200 (BB version)a great deal IMO.
Only problem with the G73 is it's size, it's pretty big(to big for me anyway) and it's low res on the BB model, oh yea no BlueTooth either.
If your talking pure GFX performance the 5870 HD will be at least 30%-40% better even at that res, + you get all the goodness of DX11 -

I'm hoping to stay a 15-incher for life.
And since we're on the topic of Radeons, how well does a Mobility 5850 do?
-
He was complaining about resolution game frame rates and how its better to get a smaller res 1600x900 from BB instead of just getting the machine from somewhere else cause best buy is just ripping people off with the semi crappy stuff here and there. 1080P gameplay.
-
I havent seen any lappy's with the 5850 under the hood. -
the new msi 15" is a 5850
-
Forge, I prefer a 15" as well but I figured I never move my laptop anyway. I only buy laptops as desktop replacements since it allows me to move it around if I want to or need to.
One of the things bothering me about the G73JH is the amount of bad lemons popping up. There seems to be quite a lot. GPU, CPU, screens, keyboards etc. Even though my G51 is being repaired due to a GPU problem, I don't think bad lemons were a problem for the BB G51/G60 models. I don't remember reading of any except for the cases where people got theirs replaced due to high temperatures. The G51J models on the other hand had the BSOD issue. So that the fact that the G73JH seems to be getting a lot of problems out of the box is a bit concerning. -

True, true. Then again, a G51 is a pretty big 15-incher.
In any case, I might jump to 17'' if Asus continues the trend of taking out the second HDD bay for more RAM slots. Oh well. I'm planning on keeping this puppy for a while. A G5x with a 5850--though by the time I upgrade it'll probably be 6950 or 7850--would be teh secksy.
But I'm still wondering how the 5850 compares. I hear it's gimped somewhat fierce.

my g51vx-rx05 got poorer frame rates in native 1366/768 than in 1280/1024 on an external monitor, how do you explain that? (game was BC2)
-
How do you explain that!
That sounds impossible. -
yes it was very strange
-
Also the wrist pad is large enough on the G73 that you could use it for an external mouse pad lol... but i LOVE it for its design ...they truely had the gamer in mind when they designed it. Just a bit large... the 7.5 lbs on the BB site has to be a typo... I think it weighs closer to 9lbs after inseting the 8 cell like most 17" lappys
