This is my first time with a "light and slim" style gaming notebook. I'm coming from a Clevo/Sager P750DM-G, with a desktop CPU inside... i7-6700K (quad core).
Now I have this 2020 Asus GX502LXS-XS79, which has an i7-10875H in it.
Here's my concern... back on the sager laptop, with that desktop CPU which I would have expected to run even hotter in a laptop, my CPU temps hit normally 72C, and sometimes up to 78C (summer months) while playing dota 2. With this Asus GX502, my 10875H is getting significantly hotter, to the point that it hits close to 100C and throttles on all 7 cores to prevent going any hotter.
I tried setting the laptop to performance/turbo in Armoury, disabling optimus, propping it up with a laptop stand (gets it higher off desk for more airflow), using an external high speed fan next to it - which is even louder than the internal fans, and undervolting the max -80mV in the bios. I'm still hitting these temps while playing dota 2 (see attachment). This laptop has that AAS thermal system, liquid metal, significantly louder fans, and still gets 15-20C hotter while playing the same game?
All I'm wondering is, is this normal for a light and slim notebook? This is the price you pay for 0.7 inches slimmer?

What are the GPU temperatures during the gameplay? Yes, CPU is getting hot for sure. But it would be good if you can provide more context. What is the average cpu wattage? Is it able to do 45W on the CPU? And is the GPU able to run under 80 degrees? Also share an estimate of what your room temperatures are like.

It's also incredible to me that this is WITH the extremely loud external fan that I've carefully positioned near the back of the laptop so that it isn't blowing any air into the laptop's outward thermal vents. On my old laptop, I barely ever even needed this fan, but it reduced temps by 10C alone when I used it. Needless to say, my temps get worse and I throttle faster when I have this fan off with this Zephyrus.
Are other people experiencing this? Dota 2 is an older game, not even very intensive. I can't imagine how newer games would work here.Attached Files:

Things tend to boost up until they hit their temperature limit. It's about what power draw at what temperature. Looks like your CPU used maximum of 70w. If you run a benchmark and watch the clock, power limit and temperature what does it settle out at? Say if your run prime95 + furmark?
These CPUs can go very high on power limits until they hit their thermal limit. With liquid metal you might be seeing a lot higher sustained clocks even after it throttles compared to normal paste. -
Could it just be a bad thermal paste Job or a bad contact between thermal paste and heatsink?
Could you post a pic from the thermal paste spreading?
Have the same issue with my pimped up Alienware M17X R4. After applying Liquid Metal temps started to highrocket after a couple of weeks and it turned out that the LM has completely dried out due to bad heatsink contact.
After cleaning up (that mess) I applied ICD and temps are okayish now....

So I just realized that the cpu hits 95-100c without even playing a game.. Just from starting up Dota 2 and sitting at the menu screen for 2 min. So something seems definitely wrong.
I think I'm going to save us the effort of diagnosing and just return the laptop and get the same one. Bought it at best buy and I'm still under their return policy window. I'll report back on the replacement's thermals. -
