    Hello,

I've been playing a few older games (Counter Strike and FFXI) and noticed that every few steps I'm taking my character "locks" up for a seconds.

I did update to 209 bios and have the latest drivers from the ASUS site. I wanted to see what else I can try before downgradeing drivers/bios.

I'm pretty new to ATI cards (normally an nVidia user), so I'm not to sure the best tool set out there to tweek.

    Thanks!

    P.S. I have a G73JH-X2

I think this is core parking, blame it on i7s.

Not even just core parking. Poor multi-thread processing.

counter-strike isn't mulithreaded though. It sounds like what core parking was doing with BC2 (which you can disable).

Core parking "problems" on PCs is an OS issue. Core parking was around long before the Core processors.

If you must point fingers, blame it on Microsoft. :)

It's not the core parking problem. I made the tweek for that and issue still exists.

Worked fine on Win7 64bit ultimate on my last PC. Pretty sure it's something with the new rig.

Just looking for some suggestions while I blindly try to figure it out.

LOL I would have stated that without seeing your system at all. :)

Just in case you haven't done this already...

I would check power settings first - make sure you aren't using the default "Entertainment" plan. Use the "High Performance" plan and/or go through the chosen plan's settings to make sure min and max processor states are set to 100% and the ATI PowerPlay setting is set to "Maximize Performance".

Next I would look at other software running concurrently. For example, certain anti-virus software can be too aggressive and disrupt operation of other running programs. Try running with AV disabled. Email, chat, automatic software updaters, and other software that uses the network should be suspect as well.

No, it's the core parking on the i7. It's much, much more aggressive than on the c2ds / amd chips.

Do you have a link that explains how core parking is some feature of the CPU?

AFAIK, core parking is entirely an OS concept and implementation, and it's Windows 7 that took it to a new aggressiveness level. From what I've heard directly from Microsoft engineers, it's because of pressure from environmentalists to be more "green".

The vast majority of these issues IME come from bad multithreaded programming, often because of programmers not knowing how to write multithreaded code on Windows, and sometimes programmers using outdated implementations that may have worked on older processors and Windows versions. Intel is very aware of this, and spends a great deal trying to offer free software and education to get programmers to properly write multithreaded code.

I'm running the 10.4 version of the ATI drivers and am able to play Counter-Strike: Source, DOD Source, Team Fortress 2, and Battlefield 2 just fine. I dont experience this "lock" issue you're describing. I'm also running the latest firmware, 2.09.
Are you running CS: Source or the original CS?

Perhaps it isn't core parking, per se, it's the dynamic over/underclock of the i7 - turbo-boost, I believe? Core parking just exacerbates the problem.

I re-installed CS:Source to assess this issue. Turns out I get it too. Lots of stutter with forward movement, (even from a spectator view) and gave me massive eye strain after a few minutes.

Tried various difference graphics settings (resolution etc, went as low as 1024x768, but the movement stutter remained.)

Turned Turbo mode on/off but that didn't help one bit. (Helped with my older FIFA games though. :D).

For the record I have core parking turned off.

I also ran the CS:Source the video stress test/benchmark @ everything max and VSync off and got a result of 220fps with stock clocks, so it doesn't seem to be a performance issue. :p

I have this issue as well bumpleboner. Not meaning to threadjack here but none of my games are responding on my system. It immediately goes to "not responding." Any help would be greatly appreciated. And i do open them through steam.

I've literally tried every driver since 9.12 now that I could. I've disabled core parking, I've set my power manageent to best performance.

I've also tried to install each driver with and without CCC. I am officially lost as to what would be causing this.

If anyone has suggestions, seems I am not the only one.

I will admit, I am NOT running Asus install of windows, I reformatted and am running my own install. Win7 Ultimate 64-bit.
