I'm hoping the experts on this forum can come to my aid! I'd like to convert to ASUS, and I think it'll be excellent for my work and internet needs. However, I was wondering if anyone can share their experiences gaming -- meaning Rome: Total War and Halflife 2 -- on these laptops. The information I've found online is spotty at best. I'm particularly interested in the w3v or v6v, but I'm worried about the ATI x600.

    Thanks a bunch!

If those are the only games you'd be interested in playing, then those two models will be just fine... you won't be able to play at the highest settings of course, but it will most definitely be playable at very decent settings.

DOnt exclude the z71v. z71v is a whitebook the v6v is ensemble. The difference is whitebooks can be customized and comes with a delaer warranty as well as asus. There were many reviews posted of the benchmarks and figures. The v6v now comes with 3 years warranty from asus for NA buyers

Which resolution were you running? And did you enable AA and AF? If so, that's quite impressive...

Yeah...that's quite expected. I think I was able to play UT2k4 with quite high resolution on my desktop Radeon 9600... the X600 should be able to handle higher resolutions with ease [|)]

my m3 plays ut2004 with default settings (800x600x32bit with most things at medium), which i was quite impressed with considering its an integrated solution! I can play any game (including half life 2), but i have to have settings at medium or low and at resolutions at 800x600... but atleast i can play them [ :D]

    i wouldn't mind a x600 though, [ :p]

    Thanks for all the responses.

I'm looking for a bit more than middling performance. I don't expect a laptop to give me a desktop GeForce 6800 Ultra SLI, but I would like a bit more than plays-well-enough.

    Soooooo.

A z71v is the obvious choice, with 1gb+ RAM and the Go 6600 with 128 vRAM. But I'm a sucker for styling and I appreciate the elegance of the w3v. I'm trying to figure out if a x600 Radeon with 64mb vRAM and 512mb RAM will give me game performance that's better than average.

Obviously, there's also LCD quality to consider.

The other alternative is to build off the Sager NP4880, which chunks up the weight to 8 lbs (compared to the z71v's 6.5 lbs) but offers 256mb vRAM on a x700 Radeon.

HL 2, Rome, and Warcraft are the main games I play now, but I'd like this laptop to be able to play games into the next year and a half (or so). I'm especially interested in people's experiences playing those games on ASUS platforms (specs a plus), but more general comments are more than welcome.

Thanks again for all your help/advice/thoughts. I appreciate it.
