Hi everyone! This is my first post. :)

I'm about to receive a new Asus laptop (I'm tracking the FedEx online).

Can an experienced person advise me on what all to do first, in plain English (kinda like "for dummies")? I'm totally new to owning laptops; this is my first one. I've been reading about partitioning, DVD backup and all that -- maybe someone could give me a step-by-step guide from unboxing to initial use?

    THE LAPTOP:
    Asus A53E-IS51 15.6" Notebook Computer, Intel Core i5-2450m 2.5GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit

    HOW I'LL USE IT:
Moderate usage; a little bit of everything, with an emphasis on graphics (Gimp, Photoshop), and occasional video editing.

Thanks for any help you can offer! I'm using the internet at the library, and come here a few times each week.

P.S. Am I the only person who thinks laptop manufacturers should still include "restore" disks?

Welcome to the forums, and congrats on your new laptop!

To answer your question plainly: I don't think there is any one, universal, initial setup process. You may want to register the product on Asus' site or by phone, but as for setup, just install all your up to date drivers (either from a disc provided or from Asus' website - sometimes the component manufacturer's website is better, as their drivers are more frequently updated), run Windows updates, consider some maintenance programs such as Ccleaner and Auslogics disk defrag, and - if you so desire - install a hardware monitoring program, such as HWinfo, Speccy, or SIW.

I'm sure other NBR users have advice too on tweaking configuration settings for more ideal performance. :)
