have you changed your monitor settings in display properties settings (i.e. right click on desktop -> settings)

to be exact: right click on desktop -> properties -> settings -> select monitor with a "2" written on it -> extend desktop to this screen

If you have an ATI graphics card, then you could try and go to the Catalust Control Centre, and change the settings from there. I find this always works for myself.

In the box on the side of the Catalyst Control, under "Graphics Settings", click "Displays Manager", and under "Desktop and Display Setup", drag the second dispay, into the black box, right click it, and select "Extend".

Is it because i am trying to use s video rather than the VGA like a normal dual display?

I had the same problem after i upgraded my ATi x1700 driver to 8.311. I then decided to use Omega drivers and after that i could go into desktop -> properties -> settings -> select monitor with a "2" written on it -> extend desktop to this screen and the box would remain checked and i could see my desktop on the tv. EDIT: after going into the omega driver settings and turning the TV on.

btw i'm also using the s-video to RCA cable supplied with my A8JP
