I would like to get input from a few more people about how well the glossy screen on the V6J works outside?

That is the only part of the Asus that is preventing me from clicking "Buy Now!"... I do a lot of work outside, and normally use a matte screen - I recently used a friends Sony that had a glossy screen and couldn't see anything (Yes, the power was on :) !

I want to buy the Asus, but if I can't use it outside or under any amount of light then I sadly will have to go to IBM :-/ (The mouse buttons on the Asus also scare me a bit, some say they are too hard to press... But I can handle that issue more than a screen)

One person has contacted me about this and he said it is "okay" outside - but I need more than 1 response...

    Thanks...

It's really hard to say, if you are outside, LCD's are a pain to use. I found a matte screen would be usable but really really washed out outside, I have yet to try my glossy screen. It's depressingly rainy and dark outside, can't test it out atm :(

When I am outside I am not looking for a 100% perfect image. I would be looking at text or a map... No video, no gaming, no photoshop - just text and maps...

It all depends how bright it is out...if you're sitting in a shadow...etc. - personally I don't think many screens (if any?) are going to be real "usable" under bright sunlight conditions.

I can tell you this......... a matte display is completely wash out even on full brightness if you put it anywhere with the sun behind you.

A glaretype display like the colorshine models have a higher brightness which helps out side.... one thing that I've notice and other may or may not have... but I encourage they try... is if you turn the brightness all the way down and put a system like the w3 or v6 towards the sun..i mean, get the sun reflecting in the upper corner of the screen..... you can actually use the computer. I did this a lot last summer, but just this weekend I was outside with my w3 and did just that while surfing the web..... You're not going to be productive like you would be with it inside, but you can see the screen better on a glaretype than a matte..... although neither are that great..... the matte is completely impossible to see.

Darktiger, i will be receiving a new V6J this week (probably Wed). If you want I can test for you then. I also like to use my machine outside.

glossy screens are also called glare types, so bright lights (i.e. the sun) will reflect off the screen.

i take my z63a around school and it does get pretty difficult to resolve dark images in brightly lit areas with glare in the way, especially on battery when i have the brightness turned way down. however, if you jack up the brightness all the way up, it is quite fine unless the sun is directly shining on your screen and it is angled into your eyes. doing that sacrifices a bit of battery life.

if you're really set on the V6J, perhaps you could also invest in an anti-glare filter? it's been mentioned before in this forum...

either way, notebook monitors aren't built for outside use... creative positioning works well enough for me.

I have had my V6j in a car twice. One time I was trying to play F.E.A.R. and the screen was near impossible to see. I bumped the brightness and did all of the tricks. The second time (in nearly identical light conditions) I was typing a paper, and while there were reflections, I could certainly see more than well enought to do my work.

I've also been looking for a filter that might improve visability oudoors. One thing I came across was a foldup hood that shields the display from sunlight on all screens. They are made by hoodmanusa... Don't haveany direct experience with it, though

did one of the tricks include throwing your jacket over your head and area surrounding the notebook (handles and hooks and headrests, oh my!)? because i tried that too!

word processors usually have white backgrounds, so that would explain your ability to work adequately, whereas F.E.A.R. was probably rather dark...

I have the same problem. Want to buy the W3J but really would like to a look at it outside before purchase. Which Sony did you view outside, I've also been debating the SZ 160. On a positive note I've been told that Portable one makes a great screen for the outdoors called transreflective, it's pricey. They should be coming out some new models based on Asus models soon, you might want to check it out.

    (nearly on topic)
Yeah. Dark games are really bad for any glare *at all*. I play Oblivion in a room in the basement, with one of those tiny basement windows, with a curtain in front of it, and during the day there's enough light to seriously mess up my ability to see any detail in the darker environments. I think I'd go insane if I was trying to play that in the car or something. I could turn up the brightness, but then it'd look washed out ;)

on the flip side, you can get away with a lot with text. I've done fine in the car in bright sunlight with a dim screen that way.

Well if you really really need a good outdoor screen, I would suggest Portableone because they offer a "Transflective UVA Display" which apparently is great for outdoor use; however, comes with a $399 pricetag...

And the notebook (MX) is based off the W3V which may not suit your needs... anyways just tryin give suggestions

EDIT: sorry didn't see your post above apes ^^

I can say from experience that my Z92u's matte screen sucks big time outside! it looks all white :(

the A6Vc is a totally different story, like others have said, the glossy screens wont be like viewing undoors, but its way way way better! you can actually read what is on the screen.

I've also tried a toshiba glossy screen outside and was rather impressed, was on a M50. So I'd put my money behind the glossy one.

I was using a VGN-S380B... Not *that* bad of a laptop - but old by todays standards.
