I ordered the Asus Z70Va at discountlaptops.com and it was shipped today. I was pleasently surprised at how well they handles my APO address. I've heard a lot of good things about this model, and Asus in general. I'm very much hoping for the best. I'll take pictures of my box, how everything was packed, what the laptop looks like before I turn it on, etc. Oh yes. I will have this sucker well documented.![]()

Congrats on the new lappy. It is a fine machine.
-
This is gonna sound horribly shallow, but I'm getting giggles over it anyway. The chances are that no one has this type of laptop on the base that I'm at. Most people buy from the BX (Sony/HP) or they're computer-nerds and build their own stuff. (And if they do order a laptop better believe it's a maxed out gaming machine that's 2,000$+)
So I'll have a unique looking laptop in the sea of Sonys, HP, and Dells. BWAHAHAHAHA! -
Cool
There ain't many ppl with an ASUS where i am.
Everytime i take out my lappy, ppl say 'Ooooooo' -
Metamorphical Good computer user
Lol, you know, how you know, you're a geekette? When you see you're first Asus in person and yell out. 'Holy =X an Asus!' in the middle of the big yuppy mall downtown.
-
Congrats on the new system you're going to love it~!!!
-
OMGOSH! I got it today! Five days! That's like lightening speed for APO!
I originally bought a Linkseys (sp?) wireless router thing from my BX. But I honestly thought my laptop wouldn't arrive until after the 15th (payday) so I returned it and used the money for something else.
Now I have my laptop but no way to transfer my desktop files or get the internet. So right now it's sitting by itself, pretty much untouched. Though I did turn it on, and everything seemed to work fine. (First glance: no dead pixals.)
Anyway, it's killing me right now, seeing it sitting there. Knowing I have to wait until I get paid tomorrow to get my router thing. GA! *shakes fist* I got my laptop "too soon"! LOL...
I took pictures too. I'll post'em later I think. Everything was in good condition though. -
congrats on the new toy
-
Nice nice. I guess I'll move this to the ASUS forums, join your new family
-
hahah this feels like a scene in a hospital where people'd start congratulating the father.. but it IS a baby. congratss..
a lil tangent, draw2m: is it true notebooks are cheaper in japan? i met this guy who said he got his fujitsu for half the price in singapore.. :O -
So Asus isnt big over in Australia either? I am studying abroad in Tasmania next year so having one of the few Asus systems would be cool. -
dysfunctiotnal, I honestly have no idea. I don't read Japanese, and wouldn't be able to tell a good price from a bad one. I could always ask one of my coworkers (who are Japanese). They might know. ^^
I installed Sims2 (+Nightlife) and it works just fine. I put everything on high, though it wouldn't give me the Shadowing option. But it ran smoothly and didn't have any hickups.
The screen doesn't seem bright enough. It's something I can live with and probably will get use to once I start using it nonstop. I tried to find the screen brightness settings, but to no avail..
Anyway, I like it very much. I'm enjoying having a more "wireless" option. Though I feel dumb getting bluetooth... -
yeayy! that'd be v v v v nice of youu..
some of us discussing it here:

I was fed up of waiting for mine because Portuguese keys where not available, so I asked for US-international keyboard instead, it left Germany today... -

Of course no one around here will probably care because it doesn't have a beer tap nor can it light your smoke.
-
why dont u hook up the asus to ur desktops wire connection, sure u cant transfer files yet but your have internet
-
Congrats
I got mine last week from G2P. I just love everything about it. Plan on writing a review soon.
-
This is kind of an aside, but, you're stationed in Misawa?! I lived in Misawa for 6 years! My sisters were born there! I thought the base was closed, but I guess not. As they say in Maine, wicked awesome.
Okay, off tangent. I'm going to grab a W3j as soon as they're on market, so within a month I could qualify to post a thread like this. I won't...but I could.... That said, congrats on the computer, whenever I hear someone excited about their Asus it pumps me up for my own future notebook. One more month, one more month, one more month...choo choo! -
-
Yes, I'm stationed in Misawa. My husband is Air Force and that's why.
I haven't heard rumors of closure. Maybe that was a while ago? As far as I know this place is suppose to stay open.
ceiph, I could, that's true. But I want everything on the laptop [I feel I need] before I officially connect to the big bad internet. Plus it'd take me forever to find all the desktop themes I like on the internet (ugh, XP default screen OOGLY!). -
This is really weird. I read your post and the other and I was born on the Misawa base too!!! I was born on base in 1986, my dad was the sqadron commander for P-3's. This is such a huge coincidence. -
Both of my very close friends, Om Prakash and Tom Cooper flew F-16's at Misawa AB.
-
Well, well, well.. I guess it's true. The military life DOES make the world a small place!
So far I really like my laptop. It's warm, but never hot. The fans aren't annoyingly loud. The screen is good (no dead pixels and if there's any light bleeding I'm having a hard time seeing it). The keyboard is really solid too.
I originally wanted a glossy screen with a lower rez. But this one (matt, high rez) is perfect. It's actually much better on my eyes than our desktop monitor. It also gives everything a much more vibrant look.
Oh yeah, I've named my laptop Bob. A friend of mine was explaining why most objects were given a feminine name (something to do with ships) and I thought to myself "I don't want to jinx this laptop by giving it a women's name. Imagine if it started acting like a women?!" So I went with a nice solid masculane name. Hopefully Bob will live up to it.
And yes, I am married and a women. -
Bob the Z70va haha
-
Hahaha. Nice cori
-
LOL...great pic, coriolis.
Perhaps I should name my Z63a... -
I left Misawa in 1990, so if I'm accurate in remembering talk of the base closing then it is indeed old news. As to naming ships after women, I think the prime reason is sailors getting lonely while they're out at sea. I've been around a lot of sailors and that would be very in character.
With all the news from Seb regarding his V6j it's nice to hear that your screen is working properly. News like that should do something to alleviate the angst I'm reading in some people. -
Ohhh, are people have screen problems? Like I said, mine looks great. The angles are really good on this too, which kinda surprised me.
And people who read this should keep in mine, mine looks great after going from Nevada to Japan! That is a long way to go, through lots of temp changes, and probably careless postal workers. That says something about the quality of this laptop. xD
And nice Bob picture. LOL
Gonna be a part of the Asus family soon...
