That's right. We would be alienating the rest of the G series. Master Forge, I think we better close the group and remake it to be inclusive on all G series notebooks.

You can track down any G-series owner you know and invite them via PM. I'd post a new thread in the gaming board, but I don't think the admins would like that.

Hey guys. In order to get more activity for the Steam group, I have decided to host the first ever prize giveaway contest that will span across two weekends. There will be two prizes up for grabs: two tubes of MX-3 thermal paste, and +1 rep from me. Of course, only tube and rep per winner.

I need some ideas for how I will hold this contest. L4D, TF2, and CS:S are already considered in the plan. But this is your party; you guys decide how to have fun.

Any administrator can decide who the player of the week is. Even though I am one of the four admin, I have nothing to do with it. I can assure you, the KGB has nothing to do with it either. I have a feeling that SACH7002 is the one nominating people.

Part of the reason why I am holding this contest is because I am yet again making the switch to another thermal paste. I am purging my entire supply of thermal paste to fun charity except for my bulk tubes of AS Ceramique, which I use for my clients' machines that aren't given the Soviet Special. MX-3 is expensive at the moment, even at the discounted price that I bought it for from my buddy down in LA. I decided to shift over to Shin-Etsu X23-7783D as the bulk deal that I landed on it is far cheaper than ICD7, MX-3, and MX-2; 20g for $30 shipped. It is by far still the best performing paste on the market despite being just as old as AS5, so I'm saving money in the long run as well as getting a little bit more performance out of my thermal paste.

Is Shin-Etsu (I'm assuming you've used it before) more or less difficult to apply than MX-3?

It's easier to apply than ICD7, but still more difficult than MX-2 and MX-3 because of it's viscous composition. If you look at any test published in the last half decade, you will see that X23 still reigns at the top of the charts. I was first introduced to it four years ago when my cousin was showing me his new Intel rig. He used X23 on his Prescott P4 and he let me put some on my Pentium M and 6600 GO on my old M38AW. If I recall, my temps dropped by a big chunk as I was still using AS5 back in the day. Because X23 was the most expensive paste, and still is, I thought that it wasn't worth the money for a few more degrees cooler, so I stayed with AS5 until I switched over to MX-2 in 2007, and MX-3 this past September, and now to X23. Had X23 been cheaper, I would have gone straight for it. And now I can make that choice because I landed a buttload of X23 for a very cheap price; ~$1.50 per gram.

Hmm. I guess when it comes to redo my paste in a month or so I'll try the Shin-Etsu.

Is it like MX-3 in that a slightly-thicker-than-paper layer won't hurt the performance (much)?

I don't know. It's been four years since I've touched X23. But from my LAN buddies that use it, it works best with the thinnest layer possible.

At this point, I still don't understand why MX-3 works better with a thicker layer. I've only applied it twice to my CPU, GPU, and northbridge; the first mount was a thin layer, and the second mount was a slightly thicker layer. Perhaps I did not give the first application enough cycles or break-in time.

Could be. Still, aren't the differences between thick AS5 and thin AS5 (to use an example) visible off the bat?

Eh. Unless Joker gets his second fan running, I think I have the coolest G51 in class. I'll hold off on the X23 for a while, I guess. Let's see what they make next.

Yes, the difference between thick and thin layers of AS5 are immediately noticeable, especially after one quick cycle to full load and back. The thin layer will yield better temperatures.

I'm skeptical of whether the second fan over the GPU will give 5150Joker the temperatures he expects. I'd say a G51 user would be better off just doing a backpanel and copper overhaul. And that includes cutting that damn hole out.

also...is Shin-Etsu difficult to obtain in america? is it MUCH better than ICD7 OR not that much difference in temps vs IC24?

No, it is not difficult to obtain in North America. Most computer shops should have them for sale. Almost all tests observe around a full degree cooler on load temps compared to ICD7.

ICD7 and ICD24 are the same product; one comes in a one gram syringes and the other in 4.8 gram syringes.

For the best bang for the buck, I would stay with MX-2, unless you really want to pay that high premium for one gram of X23 or ICD7. MX-2 is also by far the easiest to apply and remove compared to the rest.

You can always cancel your order and have me send one out to you if you need it.

If applied properly, the difference between cured AS5 and cured MX-3 is usually around 1.5-2*C at full load.

Both the tubes are open and have been used for one mobile CPU mount each as I did not receive my X23 while I was still working on my clients' notebooks.

It's not that much harder to apply. The composition is similar to AS5, but a little more brittle. I still find MX-3 easier to apply than X23; I need to dunk the syringe in a cup of hot water for a minute to soften up the paste, then squeeze some on the component and spread it out before it cools. Like all thermal pastes, you should only use a thin layer. I have mentioned before that I was getting better results with a thicker layer with MX-3, however I am going to retract what I said back then. I think I was getting worse results on a thin layer because I did a rush job on my first application of MX-3. I guess I was used to the ease of MX-2 and AS Ceramique that I had forgotten how to properly apply viscous pastes.

No joke. Either take it or leave it. Though I would prefer for the thermal paste to be going to users that need it such as those still using AS5.
