I was going to write a much more detailed guide than this but then I discovered that the vast majority of the Drivers were actually available on the driver disk that came with the laptop, Despite most of them saying they are Vista only 3/4 will install correctly on XP. Here is a list of ones that dont work and where you can find them elsewhere.

    TPM Driver
    http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/V1J/TPM_XP_060622.zip

    Intel Chipset
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/T8C...e&agr=N&ProductID=2800&DwnldID=13499&lang=eng

    4965AGN WiFi card
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/T8C...P&agr=N&ProductID=2753&DwnldID=13000&lang=eng

    LAN Driver
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/T8C...xe&agr=Y&ProductID=2775&DwnldID=4275&lang=eng

    RealTek HD Audio
    ftp://202.65.194.212/pc/audio/WDM_R173.exe

    Power4 Gear
    http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDownload/Asus-ATc-Power-Gear-Utility-V-Download-22663.html

    Infrared
    http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/V1J/FIR_XP_060622.zip

8600GT (Dont forget to download the modded .inf aswell)
    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=14097

    BlueTooth http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/V1J/BTooth_XP_060621.zip

With these and the drivers on the disc I managed to get everything to work normally, including the LED's on the front panel, The FN combo keys, And the Quick Launch keys along the top row (With the exception of the Splendid video preset change)

There were 2 devices still missing from the Device Manager, One is ATM 2.5, another is the Turbo Cache memory. Both of which only work under Vista anyway.

To Install XP you will either need to set the Bios Sata mode to Compatiablity, which puts the drive in IDE mode, Or you can put it in enhanced, But you will need to slip stream the following drivers using Nlite, Iaahci.cat Iaahci.inf Iastor.sys txtsetup.oem Do not include iastor.inf or iastor.cat or it will crash Nlite. When prompted to choose the driver after loading the .inf choose the most recent Mobile controller, Its something like MOBILE ICH8R-EM

This is the latest Power4 Gear on Asus's website. It is the US Version.
    http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/F3Ke/P4GX__Vist_070710.zip

So this is an either or thing? You don't have to do both? Isn't it just easier to put the Bios Sata mode to Compatiablity instead of making it enhanced or does it not work as well?

Thanks for posting that guide Matt. I think I will try it out today.

Its one or the other, If you put it in Compatiability mode you lose Sata features like hot swapping (Somewhat useless in a notebook) Thats the main difference though so unless your slipstreaming you may aswell go with compatiability mode. I was planning on using XP but everything looks so much nicer in Vista so I think I will stick with Vista for the minute. Ill post the full review to NBR in a few hours. Btw Tim thats the Vista version of Power4 Gear

the VGA drivers you give are for the 8600 GT, not for the 8600M GT.

No they are the correct drivers for notebooks, the 8600M GT, Notice the "Laptopvideo2go" part? They take Nvidia drivers from manufacturers and change the inf to let them install via setup, Most people already know that though.

Did you create a new partition for XP?

If so, did you use the disk manager in Vista or any other tool?

Thanks for all information about drivers...

Hi, I have done a clean install and now whenever I turn on my bluetooth I am prompted to install "USB Device".

Can someone tell me what drivers I should be using or what folder on the cd to look in?

    Thanks

Edit: XP and in particular nero is not recognizing my dvd drive as lightscribe enabled, help here please if you can

Okay all, Ive updated the guide, The only two drivers left unidentified are ATM 2.5 and TurboCache which only work under Vista. So the guide is complete, have fun.

I put up the correct BlueTooth driver, Should work now.

You need to install LightScribe`s host drivers, get them from here. It should work afterwards, even if the drive is still unrecognized in LightScribe Control Panel.

Hi, I tried vista but after a few issues I decided to go back to vista.

I have noticed in device manager the I have 1 piece of hardware that vista is not recognizing. I have no other information than shown below:

    Other Devices
    Unknown Device

Has anyone done a clean install and had this issue and solved it?

I guess the only other way to narrow it down is to post the full list of devices and someone compare them to their own but as you no it's a long list.

Any advice or help would be very appreciated.

It might be TPM, TurboCache, Or ATM 2.5, I had trouble with those, If you go to device manager, details > then from the drop down box choose hardware ID, Copy paste it here and I will tell you what it is, Im nice like that ^_^ Oh and what happened with yours? Did you ever find out if it was the GDDR3 version of the 8600GT in yours?, Not to nit pick but your sig says 3945ABGN, the 3945 is ABG, the 4965 is AGN. oh... And Asus says the 200gb HD is 4200RPM, not 5400.

    Thanks for your reply matt.

    The hardware id's listed are:
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2A04&SUBSYS_15871043&REV_03
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2A04&SUBSYS_15871043
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2A04&CC_078000
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2A04&CC_0780

I haven't looked at the gddr type yet, is this simple to check. I believe the european version is 512mb gddr2 and most other regions it's 256 gddr3 but this is only what I have read at other sites as well as the forums here.

Your absolutely right about the wifi card
    Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN

Again I don't know how to check the drive speed. I just pasted the specs that the seller supplied me.

    Thanks again matt

99% sure that is the AMT 2.5 thing, Intel Active management, Check to be sure though. To check the ram type download RivaTuner (Free) ignore the bit that says DDR3 because it says that on everyones (Including mine) go to where it says "Forceware detected" and hit customize choose system settings, from the drop down box choose performance 3D, what do the two boxes say? 475 and 400 or something else?

Mine reports the figures as below:

    Core Clock = 169

    Memory Clock = 100

Haven't a clue what this means so if you could explain it it would be great.

Ok, I don't really know how to do this but I opened the Nvidia control panel, under "Adjust image settings with preview" I have selected "Use the advanced 3D image settings" and restarted my machine. Again I don't know if this is right.

There is no change to the RivaTuner figures I quoted above.

    Thanks

As I know nothing about graphic card settings maybe someone could go through it with me to set up my card for the best possible performance.

I mostly watch dvd's and play games rarely.

Also I am using the LaptopVideo2Go.com driver and modded .inf

Okay open RivaTuner and click on the square highlighted in red
    [IMG]

then click where the red dot is that is a drop down menu and select "Performance 3D" then look at the two numbers with red dots next to them, That will tell you if you have GDDR3 or DDR2

Question: Has this changed settings or just measured settings - what happens if I un-install RivaTuner?

    Thanks again.

    ** EDIT **
I have noticed that my dvd playback is now choppy / stuttering quite a bit. I have only tested dvd playback with nero showtime so far.

It dosent change anything, It only shows you the settings, And those are DDR2 not GDDR3, If you seller told you its GDDR3 you got lied to which sucks, Basically you got screwed out of an extra 256mb of memory that the US version gets.

If you uninstall riva tuner it will just uninstall like any other program, It hasnt actually changed any of your settings unless you move the slider bar and hit apply.

I wouldnt recommend using Nero to play DVD's, Surprisingly Windows Media Player does a fairly decent job. The GPU isnt really responsible for DVD playback, it is mostly the CPU and DVD drive, The player may offload some of the decoding onto the GPU but I dont think its much, It does alot more with the new Blu ray and HD DVD playback because it decodes h.264x itself.

I always suggest VLC (can play anything including 264x (BD and HDdVD)).
I also use Klight Audio Codec package, which includes Windows Media Player Classics which is also very good at playing DVD, Xvid and movie files.

And matt is correct the GPU basically has no real effect on video playback, it is all CPU and optical drive, and the program you use to play the movie.

    Hello,

i just register on your forum because I have a problem with the GeForce 8600 drivers on my brand new V1S (Yes i am French and they are very rare here lol)

I installed Windows XP Home & Professionnal, Windows 2003 (Inluding RC2), and i always have the same problem : i can't install Nvidia Drivers.

My graphic card is not recognized as a graphic card but as a Windows service :

I can change resolution, but i can't find the device in the Device manager :

And the nvidia drivers don't recognized the graphic card niether (with the Modded INF):

I tried 4 OS on the notebook (on an other HDD, so i can use it on Vista, but i hate Vista ;=)), of course i installed all drivers, they work fine. I've never seen that, so if you could help me it would be great !!

    Regards.

Thats easily fixable, The drivers from nvidia do not include the mobile versions. To download the mobile versions go here www.laptopvideo2go.com they modify the drivers to let them install on mobile computers.

    Hello,
yes, i used the ForceWare X 163.14 (the one you linked) with the Modded INF, and the ForceWare X 165.01 too, from www.laptopvideo2go.com.

The screenshots you can see here are with theses drivers, that's why i don't understand.

Yes, i did that before I installed them.

In fact, i think the problem is that Windows recognized the GeForce as a Windows service (i can stop it, and chose how it will start) instead of a device.

So, when i launch the drivers, they don't find anything...

I tried in Safe Mode, same problem.

MaJ : I've just tried with Windows 2008 "Longhorn", and Windows find my 8600 as a device, so i could install the drivers... erf ^^

I am also a French owner of the Asus V1 on which i have installed XP (and Vista). I hav ethe same problem than "666Killer". The graphic drivers won't install. Even with the modded .inf.
Maybe we have another version of the graphic card in France ?

    Hi there !

I tried to look how the 8600M GT is detected on this notebook under Vista, with RivaTuner : it find a G84_407, same card than in the Modded INF. (i will try on XP, could be interesting).
I think our problem come from the P965 chipset, because of the PCI-E Root port. That's because of it that the GeForce is not detected as a Graphic Card, in fact it must not be detected at all.

I tried other chipset drivers than the version linked here (older of course, because these Intel version are the newest). Same result.

I think i will try to make a XP CD-Rom including all these drivers, perhaps it will work... If not, i will exchange my French V1S to get an US one :D :D :p :p

PS : RivaTuner find the 8600M GT with 512Mb of DDR3... Bug or not ? ^^

    Hi,
My V1S still can't recognize its video card under XP.

There is some conflict onthe video card. It said :
    - I/O : 03B0 - 03BB used by Mobile Intel PM965/GM965/GL960 Express PCI Express Root Port - 2A01
    - I/O : 03C0 - 03DF used by Mobile Intel PM965/GM965/GL960 Express PCI Express Root Port - 2A01
    - Memory : 000A0000 - 000BFFFF used by Mobile Intel PM965/GM965/GL960 Express PCI Express Root Port - 2A01

I tried different video driver and Intel PM965 driver, but the problem still exists.

Do you have any clue on this ?

    Thank you !

    Hi,
I found why I could'nt install the driver. This is a related to the memory. I have 4 Gb of memory and this cause the problem.
When I remove 2 Go og memory to obtain a laptop with 2 Go, the video card is detected and the driver installs easily. and there is no more conflict.
If I install the memory back (to obtain 4 Go) the video card is not seen, end the conflict is back.
I install the new bios 2.08 but the problem persits.
I will remove the 2 Go to be able to run XP. I wil try 3 Go this week ...

PS : I now Windows 32 bits is not able to handle 4 Go, but the memory is cheap, and there are 64 bits OS ...

    Hi,

ok thanks for your help, i will test this asap ! But Windows XP is not the problem, because i test on Windows 2003 which can handle 4go without any problem...

    HI!

I've got problem while installing XP on my V1s.
After the installation files had been copied on the hard disk the system was restarting and then I got a message: Error while loading operating system.

I have no idea how to solve this problem. I think Windows XP can't see my hard disk, but in BIOS it is set in compatibile mode.
    How to solve it?

    EDIT:

Solved. Creating a smaller partition and full format help. Thanks anyway.

First off, Matt, Great thread. You made my job alot easier by posting links to all the drivers.

But I do have a couple of things that I can't figure out.. I know it was said earlier that one of the things was the turbo memory that wont work in xp anyway but I got a few more devices that are not being recognized.. Maybe someone here can help me figure this out??

    Greetings.
    I very much would like:
    1. That there were 4 Gb RAM
    2. If possible install not Vista.
    On all that has tried:
    Vista
    Vista 64
    Windows XP
    Windows XP 64
    Windows Srerver 2003.

    Has come to conclusions:
Perhaps, the V1S (Santa Rosa) platform does not support 4 Gb RAM.
    The basis:
    - Windows XP 64 - perfectly works on 2 Gb, on 4Gb the video driver flies - the message already was - same a problem has 666killer and Pleige

    - Vista 64 - perfectly works on 2 Gb, if I install 4 Gb - terrible brakes, CPU utilization 20 + % (if do NOTHING)
    - Windows 2003 - same as Vista 64

If someone had 4Gb RAM without CPU Utization problems please inform.
    PS. RAM that I install - Transcend DDR 667. Chip - 7OEII D9HNL

    @ Killerbob:

    Device 1: Jmicron JMB36X Controller
    Install: ESATA from CD

Device 2: don't know, can't find this device in my V1S-AJ016E

Device 3: Intel Active Management technology - SOL
    Install: AMT (IAM_LMS) from CD

Device 4: Intel Management Engine Interface
    Install: AMT (IAM_ME) from CD

I managed to install everything without "!". Didn't test the funcionality of everything yet, I know that Wlan hotkey doesn't work (yet) but bluetooth does. :) Will post results when I find out what it is. Just got my V1S today.

I can post exact order how I installed and which software to make it work.
This is my fresh XP setup :

KillerBob, Keep in mind Miso has the UK version which does not have Turbo Memory, Turbo memory is not supported under XP so you will get a ?! mark. Also I managed to get my Wifi hotkey to work just using the intel drivers. Trusted platform module is the ACPI one I think, The driver ID I get is ACPI\IFX0102
The other one is Turbo memory I think.

    @Killerbob:

Matt's right. My V1S is different version. It's German version V1S-AJ016E.
Then there's also UK version V1S-AK013E, and I'm sure also a lot of others.
When I didn't know which driver I need, I used automatic search for driver on CD, then XP found it itself, so then I knew what it was. Not sure for those two that are left for you. I don't have them in my laptop.

    Hope you sort it out!

    Regards,

    Miso

I hope it's not wrong to post this question.

Could some of the more knowlegable guys or gals here produce a clean, slipstreamed version of XP SP2 with all the correct drivers inc sata (but no bloatware).

I am not asking for anyone to provide pirated copies or cordone piracy.
I may be wrong but if we install a clean slipstreamed version of XP SP2 and use our own original product keys then this is legal isn't it?

If this is not possible then for those that do know how would it be possible to write a detailed (newbie orientated) guide to slipstreaming V1S Specific XP including sata drivers and all other hardware drivers but also removing as much of the non required rubbish from it first.

I love my V1S, i like the appearence of Vista but it is monolithic by comparison to XP and my V1S should run quicker than it does due to Vista.

    Thanks Everyone
