can anyone tell me how to install a clean window with selective utility.

with two Cds that ASUS provides, it automatically install everything, and takes almost forever.

I think you can request a OEM CD from Asus.... at least that is the case with dells. Anyways, you could:

    Buy a retail copy

    Buy an OEM copy

Borrow a cd from your friends and use the serial on the bottom of the notebook.

Wait.... did I misunderstand you? Do you want a clean install of XP on your notebook, but don't have the setup CD?

I'm assuming that you're using Win XP (You should try to specify which OS you are using btw). anyways regardless of which version you are using - you bought a computer that came with windows Preinstalled. This means that your OS is an OEM version. You should be able to find a license key on your computer - usually on the bottom. So you have half of what you need.

You need to find a friend with the same version of windows as you (XP Home vs. Pro vs. MCE - let's say you have XP Home). So you need a Windows CD that is XP Home OEM version (vs. retail).

You can technically download a copy of Windows XP CD because it is the license that makes your copy of Windows legit. So if nobody you know owns a copy of OEM Windows XP - like Dell computers used to ship with good XP discs - download it. Be careful when you do if you decide to download it because some people [illegally] modify the CD and that can have detrimental effects. If you give me the name of your copy of windows I can find an unmodified Windows XP install disc. Anyways once you obtain it, use THAT to install the OS. There are steps to follow, but just boot with the disc and reformat everything - repartition it if you like in Windows Setup, and then install it using your Key and then activate it and you'll have a decent copy of Windows XP without all the extra stuff from ASUS. Aside from formatting time (if you partition it it will take a lot longer - most new computers have a ~8GB partition that is a recovery partition which will do what your CD will) but if you don't partition and quick format it should take maybe half hour, 45 minutes tops.

@ hehe299...: why would you want to buy another copy of Windows if you have one already?

Well, if he has tonnes of money and nowhere to spend them, that would be a pausible route. I did suggest the serial way too. Anyways, can you tell me where to get an unmodified copy of XP HOME SP1? I was forced to install linux after I lost the CD (still have the serial on the back of the comp).

first of all, I would hardly consider buying another copy of Windows an option. I don't know anybody who wants to waste 100 bucks :p.

Why on earth would you want Windows XP SP1? I don't think I could find that, but I can rip my own XP OEM SP2 Home edition. I'll up it as a torrent somewhere, I'll let you know later.

EDIT: to admins/mods - this is not illegal as the key is required. If you have a problem with it though I will refrain from mentioning it here.

EDIT2: sorry - I did see that originally but then after reading your thread I forgot that you did say it.
