IF you are a HD5870M user, you may have noticed it stays in 3D clocks all the time and never downclocks in 2D or IDLE.

I think it's atrocious that ATi allows desktop versions to downclock to 200/300 while ours remain 700/1000

What does it lead to, is it just power consumption? I am just curious :).

This is not happening with the M17xR2 users. I think you need to spam Asus not ATI. Remember that the Asus card is proprietary thus manufactured by Asus.

Yeah dude, this is an ASUS problem, not ATI. Spamming ATI isn't going to do jack.

I have no idea why they don't do anything about this. Either Ati or Asus need to allow the downclocking of memory in power save mode so the GPU fan can run more silent and the battery can have a much longer life.

This is just too stupid to be true.

So this is a video BIOS problem.

I'm glad I stirred up talk about this outrageous not downclocking of memory but why is Asus taking so bloody long to fix this? MSI can do it so why can't Asus?

I think Asus support is pretty abysmal. They take waaay too long to fix issues with the laptop with a BIOS that shouldn't have been there in the first place. And then they don't take people like me serious when I start hammering about the downclocking. And then I have to see that MSI does take this thing serious and does something about it.

What the bleep is Asus doing ?

Agreed, that is vBios problem. But at least we have powerplay working, that reduces core to 300 from 700. Let's hope Asus will come out with new vbios.

That only mildly reduces heat and power consumption when idle. The real power hungry heat producing monster when idle is the GDDR5 memory.

It needs to be downclocked and soon too. Get your bleep in gear Asus. You have no idea what you are doing.

Would be nice if ATi and Asus worked together on this to expedite this issue.

I'm a wuss, too afraid to try.

This was posted in the Alienware Forum.

Alienware HD5870M vBios. I seems I was the 10th person to download it, re-uploaded to mediafire for you to try.

Edit the existing vbios to match the Dell 5870 settings if you want to try it. I wouldn't flash the Dell vbios on the Asus card. Too risky.
