Hi everyone,
I have an A8Js (T7200, 2GB RAM, 120GB HDD 5400rpm), and I'm hardrive for a 7200rpm (i work with some programs that continously access the HD and the increase of HD output would be welcome), but I have some questions:
- Does anyone knows what happens with the warranty if I change the HD? I have 2+1 option years of warranty and I don't have to lose it (I already had to send the laptop for RMA with 6 months of use ...)
- I know that a 7200 rpm drive decreases the battery life and increases the heat and noise produced. Can anyone that has this type of HDD share some thoughts on these issues? Does the noise increase a lot? Does the increase in heat produces has an impact on the CPU temperature (the HDD is a bit far from the CPU, but it can have some impact)?
- Just to be sure, the A8Js has a SATA interface, right?
- what are your opinions on this drive? I've read some reviews that liked it a lot.
All the best,
nickie

ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
Asus generally doesn't consider HDD replacement (or RAM upgrade, for that matter) to be void the Ensemble warranty, although others have kept the original HDD intact to replace into the chassis if it goes in for service.
The majority of 7200 drives are not going to produce any significant increase in "noise" from typical usage patterns, above the 5400 models. There will be a modest increase in the internal chassis temperatures from the heat generated by the higher spindle speed, so you might have the fan come on earlier and longer than with your 5400. There will also be a modest decrease in the battery life, but it sounds like that both of these issues would be outweighed by your use requirements.
You will find opinions all over the map regarding which manufacturer's HDD's are is better, faster, etc. Seagate makes solid drives, and the Momentus series is their premier notebook line. -

One more question,
The seagate I mention has a SATA II (SATA/300) interface. The A8Js only has a SATA interface. Is there any compatability issue in using this drive in a SATA interface?
Best,

ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
As I understand, SATA300 drives are back-compatible with SATA150 interfaces.
Not completely sure on that point, however. Perhaps others here can confirm. -
SATA 3.0 Gbit/s peripherals are backwards compatible with a SATA 1.5 Gbit/s controller. If you experience problems, you should rearrange the jumpers on your new harddrive to SATA 1.5 mode (you might as well do this).

Thank you all!!!
