This is a fairly common problem as I have observed. Too many people have put this question to the world and so many different answers have been spit out. But none of them work for me, or I just don't understand what they are trying to say. So here's the problem.

I have a G51Vx with Vista Home Premium 64-bit, nVidia GTX 260M. I connect the laptop to my TV via HDMI cable. I see video, but there is no sound. I have tried tinkering with every possible setting and hard-wire connection possible, but I just cannot get audio. I have even rolled back a version for the nVidia drivers as one post suggested, but to no avail. I select HDMI Output, and nothing happened, Realtek Digital Audio and the same. I make the Speaker default and I can hear sound from the laptop while connected to HDMI but nothing through the TV.

    Please help.

Have you tried downloading the newest realtek driver?

Go to Control Panel>Sound, select HDMI audio and click set default:

Maybe I can be of assistance by saying just give up ;)

I am one of those that had the same issue.

    PC: MSI Media Live
    TV: Samsung LN-T4065F
    Cable: HDMI
    Problem: Video but no sound
OS: Tried Vista, XP Pro, MCE

Tried updating Realtek and no soup. Tried different OSes. Tried different cables. Tried different bios firmware and setups.

Here is the funny part: my XB360 works on the same TV, same cable, same port. And the real kicker is the PC works on a low end TV via HDMI with video and sound.

The problem is either the TV or that the two are not compatible. That is the only resolution I got after going to MSI and Samsung.

    What TV do you have?

IF I remember correctly, this is more or less what I do:

Hook the PC up via HDMI.
    Do what Ken said.
Start a video or song or something so that you know whether or not the sound starts playing.
Switch the laptop over to HDMI out mode
Pull the HDMI cable from the laptop, plug it back in.

That's more or less what I do, but again I haven't done it in a while. If I remember, next time I get my sound working, I'll let you know how to fix it. I'll just make a topic for it.

I've used HDMI to my TV for a while now and everything works perfectly.

I've actually found that you may have to restart some programs before the TV will start playing sound off of them.

Furthermore, with HDMI set as default, right click on the Digital Output Device icon and click on test. If your TV makes a sound then you've got things set up well but its your programs that are being wonky.

It may be a Samsung TV issue. Do you know which model you have? At the end of the day with me my PC worked on another brand of TV fine and my XB360 worked on the Samsung fine. Just not the PC to the Samsung TV.
