I'm looking to buy a new Asus 17" with the HDMI to connect to my 24" LCD
If the notebook has a native resolution of 1680x1080 and the LCD has native 1920x1200. Can I connect the LCD with the notebook HDMI out and use the LCD at the full native 1920x1200 resolution?

If this will work, will it also work with the apple 30" LCD at 2560x1600?

    thanks

It should be able to run 1920x1200, but that is the max res supported by HDMI as it is single-link DVI, whereas 30" monitors need dual-link

You will have to check what version the HDMI is. If the HDMI is 1.0-1.2a, then the max resolution is 1920x1200. If the HDMI is 1.3+ then if can support up to 2560×1600 over a single link.

Id be more prone to think your going to be using 1920x1200 on a notebook, the other spec & power is more of a desktop territory.

Also not sure about the Apple but dual link dvi is the main connection for these big res 30" monitors the 3007 Dell only has it, the new 3008 has HDMI but cost almost $800 more and is almost exactly the same monitor, id never pay that much more just for a HDMI port :p

*I like big, so 37" HD LCD 1920x1080 was the way to go for me, still high res but cheaper and easier to run*

I use my G50V-A1 15.4 inch 1680x1020 with an HDMI connection to an external LCD TV 40 inches 1080 P and it runs at it's native 1920 x 1080, so there answer to that is a definite yes. It is beautiful, looks much clearer than a VGA hookup. The sound even comes through to the tv speakers without extra wires.

Can't speak to the Apple display as it would take a few months of my pay to pay for a Apple display :)

thanks everyone. You've answered my question. I plan to wait and buy the ASUS g71g unless I find a great price on a G50 with blu ray and a decent video card
