    Hi!

I will exchange today my notebook
    Asus M6Ne
    15 wide (1280-800)
    80 gig
    1 gig ddr333
    dvdrw
    64 mo 9700 mobility.

    for a Dell 9300
    17 wide xga (1440-900)
    512 ddr2 533
    Combo DVD-CDR
    6800 go 256mo

and I'll add 400$ Cad to that. I'll keep my 1 gig ram ddr333 and my DVDRW

    So basicly:

    for a Dell 9300
    17 wide xga (1440-900)
    1 go ddr333 (I know it's not faster tahn ddr2 BUT I prefer havin 1 gig)
dvdrw (will this work? seem to be a ATAPI 50 pin normal interface...)
    6800 go 256mo

    I need to know if

1- the memory will work ( I know that Sonoma is supposed to work with ddr333 and the speed gain with ddr2 is not that much...)

2-DVDRW seems to be a normal 50 atapi so it should'nt be a problem, just swaping the face...

    Please help!

The optical drive will probrably not work, but I'm not sure, even if it does, the faceplate will be awkward. As for the RAM, it'll fit but is there any base ram in the 9300?

I'll just swap the ram. I don't care if the Asus does'nt support ddr2 as long as the Dell support ddr333. I want to keep my 1 gig of ram.

And for the DVD, I'll swap too but keep the original faceplate. All I kneed to be sure is that the faceplate are interchangeable! Many ppl buy generic DVDRW and installs their old faceplate on the new drives...

err dont ddr2 and ddr ram have different interface thingies? as in ddr ram wont fit into a ddr2 slot and vice versa.

This might just be referring to desktop versions of DDR2, but apparently it runs at a completely different voltage than DDR, so your memory will probably not be compatible with your laptop. Source (pdf).
The memory controller for DDR2 probably doesn't know how to handle DDR, because in the pdf I referenced above, the Intel 915 chipset supports both, depending on the motherboard, but 925 supports only DDR2. Furthermore, I believe that DDR2 uses the same SODIMM slot as DDR in notebooks, but the notch in the middle is probably misaligned to differentiate. Either way, I doubt DDR works in a DDR2 slot and would not take the chance of trying it.
And I don't know for sure, but I think Dell doesn't use a standard interface on their optical drives, so I doubt the compatibility there either. You're dealing with two different manufacturers and two different generations of technology.

I agree... I don't think the swap is worth it.
    Besides... th M6Ne is a classic... :)

Keep the M6Ne, you will be disappointed in the build quality of the Dell, since you're coming from "THE M6Ne."

agreed the unknowns would make the swap unfavorable just wait till you can save more money to completely get a new one.

If you didnt have to ADD any money I would say go for it. Otherwise I would not do it.
