 I have a laptop in my sig running mce2005, and everytime I pop in a cd whether it be installtion cd, game, music, just any disc, mce starts and tries to play it as if it thinks that I just popped in a movie disc. I don't see any settings in MCE to disable this setting even though I have disabled auto run in windows, but this keeps happening and its so annoying. When I was installing BF2 and when it asked me for disc #2 I popped it in, mce starts and says it can't play the movie on the disc (obviously) and I have to hit ok and exit mce its just so annoying that gets under my skin. This has happened day one I got my laptop which was only last month. I called asus and they told me they have no clue. is it THAT hard to figure out? If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it, thanks.

There can be 2 problems, hardware or software.

It can be possible the Optical drive is not working correctly, i suggest you should put in a DVD movie and see if it plays? And what program does it play in? Window Media Player?

Then possibly put in a Data DVD in which you may have files, pictures, small programs, and see whether you get that error aswell.

Look at what each of your media players associate to, for example Winamp can associate to many Video codecs and Music codecs, WMP can do the same. There may have been a mistake in association.

Furthermore, open my computer when you put the BF2 cd in and see what happens to the optical drive, does it appear as a picture of BF2 or just a blank CD or other?

It's a software issue with Windows, not a hardware glitch, which is why Asus was unable to offer any guidance.

I know that in regular XP, you can assign the action to be taken when a disc with XX type of files is inserted into the drive, but I've never used MCE and it's possible that option may not be available since that OS is more media-based.

I don't have my notebook with me at the moment, so I can't run down the path for the file assignment for you. Perhaps others may have this, or I can look for it later tonite.

It's software..... there's an option to change that, but just like you can select what program to use automatically when you load a certain disc or camera or whatever...... cd's and dvd's and probably even camera memory sticks are set in MCE to load up in that software. Again, you can change it and I would, unless you're using MCE as a real media center in your house, you'd probably like to use media player or winamp or something else.

Thanks for the replies, let me clarify a couple of things to maybe narrow down my problem and to make it more clear.
    1. I have a desktop running mce 05 as well and this does not happen. and mce 05 is just an extension of regular xp the actual os is the same.
    2. When I pop in an actual DVD movie, mce starts up and it plays the movie automatically without me doing anything, but when I insert a data disc, mce starts and says it can't read the disc (because its a non movie disc).
    3. When I insert a disc, ie. bf2, it shows the bf2 icon in my computer next to the drive letter.
    4. When auto run is enabled, I a box appears asking me what program do I want to use to run, proceeded by mce starting up. When I close mce, I go into box and just select the viewing folder and check the box of use this program everytime, and it makes no difference.
    5. I thought by disabling the auto run (which I did in the registry) nothing SHOULD happen when you pop in a disc regardless of what type it is.

There is absolutely nothing in the actualy mce interface that lets me do any kind of setting tweaks regarding this matter... When I spoke to an asus rep he said he has never heard of this problem before and need to open a case, so it appears that I'm the only one with this issue. its not a deal breaker but it gets so very annoying to have mce start up EVERY time as I do not watch movies on my laptop often.

I use MCE quite a bit, but I believe there's an option IN MCE, not the autorun box in windows... but in the settings of MCE itself that deals with cds, dvds, everything..

thanks, I will go home and fiddle around with the settings in mce, but if you can, let me know which settings to look for, mce doesn't have a lot that you can change, so that would greatly help.

In the set up to MC there is an option..... I'm telling you. I don't know if it's paired to the option in windows, but it's very specific and detailed in terms of what'll start the program up. Can you at least get into those settings? What do you see?

I have looked and looked and looked. if its in there, I just don't see it. when i get into the settings, these are what i see:
    general
    tv
    pics
    music
    dvd
    messenger
    radio
    help

I tried everything, dvd settings is just for watching dvd, nothing for startup. I think what you might be thinking about is the general settings which contains starup and windows behavior. and in there you just check/uncheck off always on top or start mc when windows starts, or show taskbar notifications...etc. so I'm just completely lost.

Humm, I'll look into this for you but I don't have a W2j at home - but I will look at another MCE system and see if I can't figure it out. Someone with a W2j who's using nothing but it everyday may be more helpful if it's some setting I'm missing... but apparently no one else is really chiming in.
