I upgraded my mates Asus A6KM laptop.

    Currently have:
    x1 512MB Ram
    x1 1GB Ram

    Upgrading to:
    x1 1GB Ram
    x1 1GB Ram

When I replaced the 512MB with 1GB memory, laptop switches on, but does not do anything.
When I removed 1GB memory, all works perfectly.

    My thoughts:
    Memory not compatible
    Memory faulty

The new memory module 1GB details are the following:
    SAMSUNG KOREA
    K4H1G0838A-TCCC
    SO-DIMM 400 1GB

I checked for compatibility at crucial.com here. Is it compatible, looks like it?

I bought the memory on Ebay from here.

Please your opinions ASAP if possible. Thank you in advance.

Yes the ram is the correct one, but, try just 512mb and take out the 1GB ram, and see if the notebook works.

The notebook should work with 1.5gb, but since it is not, you may want to run a memtest to verify the ram are truely good and in working order. Test the 512mb one first just incase that has failed or becaem defective.

Thanx for the reply, see that's the problem, I can't do a memtest because the laptop won't boot up when I insert the newly bought 1GB memory! When I only have 512MB in it works perfectly, as soon as I put in 1GB newly bought memory, it doesn't work. How can I test the memory?

You are still able to test both ram individually using memtest. So do this.
    1) Put in the 512mb, run the test, post results.
    2) Put in the 1gb, run the test and post reults.
    3) Put the 512mb in Dimm Slot #1, and 1GB into Dimm Slot #2, then test for boot.
    4) Put the 512mb into Dimm Slot #2, and the 1GB into Dimm Slot #1 and test for boot.

Aside just put the ram in, and then switch it...that's all you needa do, there's no real indication of which one is dimm 1 or 2.

    I did the following:
1)Put in 512MB only, laptop boots up.
2)Put in 1GB only, laptop power goes on, but nothing happens, screen blank, no booting up, nothing.
    3)Same as 2
    4)Same as 2

I think the memory must be faulty or not compatible...

do you hear any beeps? Also, this may seem like a stupid question, but are the ram speeds the same? Perhaps the stock ram is slower than the max crucial recommends, and there's an incompatibility there?

Next time buy Kingston. Life-time, "no-questions-asked" warranty directly with the manufacturer, so long as it isn't physical damage. They even pay shipping both ways.

Great info thanx... I bought through crucial.com. They have free delivery and prices not too bad. I also know for a fact that RAM will be compatible according to their RAM checker.
