Those are really two different worlds you are talking about. The desktop is be MUCH easier to upgrade in the future but then again you'll have a hell of a time bringing it over to a friend's house.

I own the G50VT-A2 and LOVE IT! So I guess I'm a bit bias.... but I would get the G50, then again I got it because I wanted a laptop and not a desktop.

If you were looking at the Apple MBP, why are you now looking at desktops? The first decision would be laptop or desktop, then if you decide laptop the G50 could be a good choice.

My buddy has the Apple MBP and is very impress with my G50. His MBP is a very nice laptop and he likes the apple OS but has also installed windows XP. His laptop beats mine in some areas, battery life being the biggest, but mine beats his in several ways (blu-ray, dual drives and OLED display). They are trade offs either way. I made my choice based on price and features of other laptops. I needed the laptop to have a very good video card and the G50VT had one of the best for the price. The rest of the features looked good and I like ASUS as a company so I went for it. Like I said before, I LOVE my laptop.

    Hope this helps

Well, for one thing, that Desktop is overpriced for the hardware that you would be getting; A tower, a keyboard and a mouse.

The HP Desktop has 8GB PC 6400 DDR2 RAM, a G50V0-A2 would have 4GB of PC 6400 DDR 2, and upgradable to 8GB in the future. Although I bet the memory timings are looser (slower) in the laptop, although shouldn't be a big deal.

As far as productivity/business actvities, the desktop would be a tad faster because of the better I/O from the hard drive (Although almost even speed if you Raided 0'ed the two 320GB drives in the laptop). However, the AMD chipset with the CPU running @ 2.5GHZ would not be noticably faster than a
P8700 C2D Montevina, with SMP non-ready apps. However multitasking would be better with the desktop, as well as SMP ready apps because it has 4 cores (4 CPU's in a CPU package), or in other words, ~~about twice the x86processing power of the G50V-A2.
I don't really know how the Phenom compares to the latest Intel Mobile Chipset, but I strongly suspect the Montevina Intel Mobile platform is the same if not a bit faster than the AMD Desktop chipset & CPU combo.

So in other words, if you want a desktop, get a (Trustworthy/Good) buddy to help you build your own Desktop with better Specs for less $$$$, or buy the G50V-A2.

    I hope this was helpful!

I really wanted a 17" (Gateway FX), but decided to take the plunge and I purchased the G50VT-A2 from Amazon. SHould have it this Friday.
Hope I did not rush things. I like Apple and may save up and get an imac someday. I am abit nevious about the purchase because a 15% restock fee will incur if I do nto like the G50.

I do some gaming, and like to stream videos from netflix. I may get a 24" monitor and need advice on which is best. I seen a Gateway 24" and it had a lot of bleeding.

    Thanks for the help

I think (and hope) that you will like your new laptop. These forums have LOTS of good information about this laptop and have been very helpful for me.
