Had a question, I have an old Asus S5Ne with a Hitachi 40GB hard drive which basically failed on me. I bought a Fujitsu 60GB to replace it.
My question is, who warranties the HD when it fails? Asus or Hitachi? I ask because my Asus 2 yr warranty is up, but if I recall correctly, Hitachi has a 3 yr warranty on their HDs. If the latter were true, I may still be able to get them to replace/fix the HD. Thanks

Well, I would just Hitachi up and explain the situation. No harm can come from it. Best of luck!
-
It's probrably Hitachi, since the warranty is done for ASUS, but mind as well call em and ask - no harm in asking.
-
I'll try to give Hitachi a call this coming week and see what happens.

Hitachi, definitely. Check their website, there should be a way to generate a RMA online. Seagate works that way.

I was curious since I have a Hitachi drive that I replaced and never got around to making phone calls. I found this site. See if this helps http://www.hitachigst.com/portal/si...i_baseMenuID=3d0cb215112b6934ab937c27aac4f0a0

You're right and you're wrong...... Hitachi has a 3 year warranty on their retail (boxed) drives... just like Seagate has a 5 year..... However, in terms of an OEM system - those drives are warranted for 30 days from the maker.
... I know this because for our custom systems we specifically use the boxed drives - just like the cpus we use - because the warranty is greater and can help an end user down the road... It is more expensive though, so it's not commonly used by companies in our position and certainly not used by Asus.
... and yes, they can tell by the serial number... -
I see, so I'm SOL with the Hitachi drive then. Oh well, saves me time and a headache from having to deal with Hitachi.
ps. Justin, if I was still under warranty from Asus, would they have replaced/fix the HD? -

I really don't care what you guys do, but the cost difference - as little as it may be for the end user - is where the warranty comes from.. they're typically 10-15% more expensive - which is typically what those extended warranties are costing them.
On the other hand, when you're talking about 100,000's of systems, that extra $20-25 adds up, especially when the fail rate is so low that you'd know it'd be cheaper to replace the few drives that go bad than to pay for the extra warranty on all of them. At the same time, the OEM's don't care about what happens after their warranty is up.
Under warranty, it would go to Asus - certainly not hitachi - You bought an Asus and under that purchase your warranty was on the complete system.
If you want to try to replace it with hitachi, you certainly can, but it's a long, drawn out process and although it may work, I'm just telling you what I know. -
Justin, I appreciate your input, but you make it sound bad when someone else has a conflicting answer other than yours. I wish you didn't have to say "I really don't care what you guys do". This is a forum and input from everyone is welcomed. I asked a question and got several different answers, its nice to hear the differences. Whether the situation goes one way or the other, no sweat off my shoulders. Don't take it the wrong way.
I appreciate the comments! -
