Ok, so I purchased a new HD about a month ago to replace the failing one in my replacement laptop. I started using the new one as the main and the old as a secondary drive. Exactly 1 month later Win 7 couldn't read the old drive so I assumed the drive was dead. Why is it that now. I can look at the entire contents of the *DEAD* drive in splashtop?

Not sure if this helps but I had hdd issues on g51vx-x3a with addind 2nd hdd. Added ssd and did clean win7 install. Then added back in 320gb seagate as 2nd drive. If I had enhanced mode for sata in bios ssd would work and be recognized but not seagate. If I set compatible sata mode then seagate worked but not ssd. Found a post on asus forums to try "load user defaults" in BIOS. That did the trick. Now both drives ahci and working. Note that manufacturer defaults in BIOS would not fix issue. Hope this helps.
