I want to upgrade my son's PS3 with a new hard drive so I'm thinking of removing one from my G50V and replacing it.

    My HDD is this one:

I want to throw this one in mine:

    http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=377

I don't see any reason why the 320 GB HDD won't work on my laptop other than the SATA interface, which is 1.5 Gb/s on the 250 GB HDD and 3.0 Gb/s on the 320 GB HDD.

I think I'm okay for compatibility.

Am I correct to assume I'm good to go with this change?

    Thanks

    Yes, you are correct.

SATA II (3.0Gb/s) is backwards compatible with SATA I (1.5Gb/s). You can use both interchangeably...

    Thanks.

I've built my own desktop computers and this is my first laptop so I wasn't quite sure if the 320 GB would work. I know the 250 GB HDD from mine will work in the PS3 and I'd rather have the extra 70 GB because 320 GB in a PS3 would be overkill.

    I appreciate the response.

You really think so? I didn't think there would be that much of a difference not to mention the extra heat it would create.

I don't think the heat will be an issue anyways. These drives are running pretty cool. From the performance point of view, 7200RPM will always beat 5400RPM drives. Moreover the 7200RPM one has 16MB cache whereas the slower one has 8MB cache. This will add-up to the performance difference.

I have just checked their prices at Newegg:

    WD 320GB 5400RPM: $74.99 + free shipping
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136197

    WD 320GB 7200RPM: $79.99 + free shipping
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136280

If I were you, I would definitely, 100% for sure purchase the 7200RPM one. $5 is nothing today...

I'm just wondering, this is an afterthought, if it will void my warranty.

No, it won't. Only replacing your CPU and/or GPU will void your warranty on the G50.

I have a WD 320GB 7200rpm black drive in my G71v, it replaced a WD 250GB 5400RPM drive and so far no problems.
