Has Asus Vivobook S15 - a metal body - or not?

Has the Asus Vivobook S15 with the configuration 8250u and mx150 a metal body or not?

I'm totally confused, because every magazine and every video review says something different and contradict each other.

Obviously there are two very similar lines:
    - "Vivobook S15 S510"
    - "Vivobook 15 X510"

Notebookcheck says that they think that the second is made of plastic. But then again they also said that the first one doesn't seem that robust. So what? :vbconfused:

If that assumption is right, and only the S15 is made of metal - which parts are from metal exactly?
    - everything? (lid, base-top, base-bottom)
    - only the lid? (while base-top and base-bottom are plastic)
    - only the lid and the base-top (while base-bottom is plastic)

    - or is it all B.S. and the so called "Aluminum-Design" is just a glossy color sprayed on a full plastic chassis?

    :vbconfused:

It doesn't matter - Plastic can be stronger than aluminium depending on the execution. For example, the GS series from MSI have aluminum chassis yet a plastic Dell 7577 is more strudy and less easy to damage. Get the configuration you like and just take care of it.

The Dell 7577 is very thick, which makes up for the weakness of the plastic.

The Asus' however is very thin, so it does matter if plastic or metal.

No, it does not. What matters is internal construction and support. Look at the MBP - it is a lot thinner than the laptop in question but several times stronger. Also look at the ThinkPad X1 carbon - it's thin, plastic, and more durable than any of these laptops could ever me. A thin sheet of aluminium is not going to be stronger than a thin sheet of plastic.

I disagree. Also Notebookcheck says that the Thinkpad X1 Carbon uses special hybrid-magnesium-alloy. And Magnesium is again a metal. If you want to debate metal vs plastic - fine, but not here, and I'm not in the mood for that.

My question was, if there is a material difference between X510 and S510, and if metal is used, which parts of the notebook are metal. I prefer an answer from people who actually own or have tested these devices.

Sigh, enjoy wasting your time looking for information that is not really of use since both devices are mid-tier. At best you have a plastic build covered with an aluminium cover to give it a premium feel. At worst you have brushed plastic that feels similar to aluminium but doesn't heat up as much.

You are of no help here, because you are just speculating and guessing. I don't need that. I want facts about these specific notebooks. And you can't provide these facts.

Even your arguments (Thinkpad, Dell) were wrong, or let's say: your reasoning was wrong. You are also wrong again with your latest post about mid-tiers, because even the mid-tier laptop Acer A715 has metal parts on the body - and not just for looks - for example, there is a huge difference in sturdiness between A515 lid and A715 lid.

So what do you want to tell me exactly, besides that you are wrong? Post for the sake of posting? Please go somewhere else. Next time I'll report you.

Sigh, in any case - both are plastic

NBC has the S510 article and LM have the X510 article

The only difference is the top lid - the S510 has a thin sheet of aluminium on it that doesn't contribute anything. I'll quote NBC

The lid has just average resistance to twisting and can be easily depressed down its center with a slight push of a finger. The bar hinge is thankfully very wide for better stability and with minimal teetering while typing on a flat desk, but this alone doesn't make up for the mediocre rigidity of the overall system. (NoteBookCheck Editorial Team)

Meanwhile, the plastic X510 lid apparently does better than the "aluminium" S510. Who would have guessed? Oh right, I did. Several hours ago.

it’s still made of plastic and features that iconic concentric circle pattern. Pressing the middle results in slight bending and barely noticeable ripples on the LCD screen. It’s also fairly resistant to torsion (LaptopMedia Editorial Team)

EDIT: Instead of issuing empty threats to people, try listening to others with a wee bit more experience next time. Cheers.

I was serious in reporting you, if your next post was similarly useless and wrong as the ones before. However since you made an effort now, it's fine for me.

Still... if you had read the very first post thoroughly, you could have guessed, that I already know these articles and that this information is not enough, because all these magazines are contradicting each other. Example: the NBC article for the X510 says:

" However, this appearance is misleading, and the 2 kg case is made solely of plastic parts. This is a significant difference to the VivoBook S15, which is completely manufactured from metal."

Now here is the thing. They claim the S15 is "completely" made from metal, while at the same time other another magazine says, that only the lid is from metal. What is correct now?

I've also digged through various youtube reviewers and there is nothing where you can make out which information is correct and which not. That's exactly why I want facts from people who own it and can give a clear answer out of their experience - and not just some quick & dirty walkthrough of a 2-hour-test, and neither speculation or guessing.

And these quotes prove exactly what? That pressing a finger against the lid can bend it? There is no mention whatsoever that the plastic lid is better. Also you got different reviewers with different finger pressure. And as I said, it has been a difference in sturdiness to me if a notebook body is enhanced with metal or not - because of my own experience.
If you don't perceive it that way - that's your opinion - but that's NOT the point of this thread. The point of this thread is to find out which parts are metal. And this question is still unanswered. Maybe the chance is small that someone can answer this question in this forum, but after all this is a popular notebook forum, so why not try.
