Has anyone tried to upgrade W5F to 2.5GB ram?

    Hi all,

I'm new here and I've just recently purchased the W5Fm.
I'm not new to forum rules so I've already tried the search function but was unable to find anything that has an answer to my question.

Yes I am aware that on the Asus website it says W5Fm's max ram is 1.5gb, but from what I've searched on Google, it's only because 1. CPU prevention and 2. Asus engineers didn't test this (?)

So I'm just wondering if anyone has tried it successfully? If so, what brand of RAM was used and did it create any unstable problems?

    thank you

Wait, why is it 1.5GB? Is there 512MB soldered to the motherboard? If that's the case, I don't think putting 2GB in there will break anything, it will probably just not work (at the worst).

Ya thats the only solution I can think of. A 512 must be soldered to the board and only one slot is free. I highly doubt that there are two slots and they made one only accept upto 512 Mbs. That would be retarted.

I was looking at the w5f a few months ago while deciding on a notebook. From my memory, a 512mb stick is soldered to the motherboard with only one slot that can be modified.

I decided on the w7j instead as i got an awesome deal. The w7j has the same problem as the w5f in that it has a 512mb stick soldered to the slot. There has been news from others in these forums that a 2gb stick works in the w7j, even though it says max memory is 1.5gb. I havent tried this myself but i hope this helps.

Yes, there's 512mb onboard RAM and 1 free slot for expansion. It comes with another 512mb stick to fill that spot up right now and some people have purchased the 1GB to replace the 512mb to make it 1.5GB.

I've also heard that the W7J works well with the 2gb stick and so I'm just curious if anyone tried to do the same thing with the W5F series.

    thanks for the replies though!

2Gb sticks were unavailable when Asus released the W5f, and as such couldn't be tested, which is why max RAM was listed at 1.5Gb. The W5 should be able to read the 2Gb stick just fine, since it doesn't go up above the 3Gb memory threshold for 32Bit OS's.

With others being able to successfully increase the RAM to 2.5 in the W7j etc, it should work without incident as that implies that earlier Asus BIOS is able to address the full range of available memory. That said, however, I don't recall specifically anyone around here with a W5 (less popular model in the forum at the moment) actually doing this and posting.

BTW, the 512Mb had to be soldered onto the mb to get the final chassis size - there wasn't room for individual 2 RAM slots in there.

oh wow, that sure sums thing up. Thanks clearskies for such detailed description. Maybe I will get a 2GB Stick and try it out. I just hope it won't screw anything up...or if it doesn't register and sees it as a 1GB -_-"

I found this post when trying to decide to upgrade and I decided to go for it. just to let you all know that it worked!! :D

now get a total of 2166MB. (256 is already used for video memory)

The memory I got is crucial DDR2-5300.

it's helped make vista run quicker which is a relief!!!

oh wow. You actually tried it and it works perfectly?
You are using the W5Fm or W5Fe correct?

If it does work, then I'm definitely going to upgrade mine to 2.5GB.

I recently purchased an OCZ DDR2-5400 ram for my W5Fm. It has 2GB and after I replaced it with my original 512, it seems to be working fine.
It's been seen as 2.11gb in Windows vista and 2.5gb in mac os x

    yay! 2gb ram does work!!!
