I recently tried to set up my own server, by broadcasting an audio feed through my input jack. Now whenever I try my headphone jack the external speakers work, but the onboard sound never mutes itself as it should. So if I were to listen with headphones on in an office, it's worthless since nothing is muted.

    Any suggestions? Help?

I would try reinstalling your sound drivers. If that doesn't work, however, contact your tech support, because something in the audio hardware cutoff circuitry may be dead.

Try something as simiple as playing a mp3 thru windows media player and try to mute the sound when on headphones see if that works.

I think maybe your doing something similar to what I used to do when I had my own radio feed online and there are options that will bypass a mute like "listen to what is heard" or something similar that will pick up all sounds on the pc currently instead of just one line.

It's a common problem on Z96J/S96J, not sure if it's the audio jack or the sound card on the motherboard.

It is not so common. We have repaired this issue without replacing the mainboard about a dozen times. It is not an inherent defect rather a poor soldering job. You would need a pro soldering kit and an indepth knowledge of microcircuitry. It is fixable. A tell tale sign is if you wiggle the jack in a circular motion sometimes it may start to work. If you continue to use the jack it may further degrade to where the sound does not work at all.

This is why I would suggest contacting tech support for an RMA first-thing. If the notebook is still under warranty, you wouldn't really want him to void his warranty by taking a soldering iron to it himself.

i did not tell him to do that. I simply said the problem is not inherent. We believe the problem may be caused by improper use. that is yanking the jack while in use or bumping it which causes the connection to come loose. the laptop is already most likely out of warranty unless extended warranty was purchased. z96j was discontinued early 2007. it was introduced early (june) 2006

Thank you for all of the replies. I purchased this notebook (barebones) in February, so I am assuming the warrenty is not up, year from purchase date correct? I haven't had any major issues with this notebook, including any pre-exisiting audio jack problem. I have my notebook always on my desk, but I have external speakers plugged in. I haven't bumped it, pulled it, yanked it out that would have caused any problem.

That very next day I was surprised. The sound started to mute again. I did nothing to it, just restarted it the next day in dread that my headphone jack was going to be a pain to replace/fix. Wiggling the plug does nothing to either cause the sound to go out or cause crackling. Would you say that it's a fluke? or do you believe it's the start of the end for the jack?

You may still want to contact your warranty provider and report that it happened. An issue like that doesn't tend to be a fluke, so it might be worth having the notebook checked.
