Looking to upgrade my P8700 to a Q9000 here pretty soon...not that the P8700 is slow per se, but I can see the limitations of the dual core in some games like Crysis, The Saboteur, and Metro 2033.

Basically, will a Q9000 be overclockable with the G72GX? Will there be issues at all with heat? The P8700 never breaks 65C overclocked (2.9ghz) when running OCCT Linpack test...so I doubt the Q9000 will be MUCH hotter...what are the thermal limits on these things?

Also, looking at Notebookcheck.com the GTX260m scores seem universally slower with the Q9000 compared to the likes of the T9400-T9550, both of which are clocked lower than my P8700 (which is overclocked to 2.9ghz, this obviously being faster despite lower cache).

How accurate are these scores? On the same page, games like Modern Warfare are like 10fps FASTER on a T9400 than they are on the system running the 1.6ghz quad i7!

Its just that Im real close on pulling the trigger on a Q9000 and would just like to know if Im doing a good thing or not. Im fairly confident itll be overclockable as the Asus has its overclocking utility and the P8700 is rock solid at 2.9ghz.

Even if I cant overclock, 8ghz quad seems just better than the 5.8ghz on the overclocked P8700...I dont know...anyone have some ideas or opinions?

It would seem that in todays games a quad would be better, even if the clock speed per core is slower than a dual core...it would seem that more and more games use quad cores...and those that dont should be "older" enough to play fine on 2 cores in the Q9000...my opinion of course.

Q9000 should work.. heat problems will not be there.. u should be able to OC as ur PLL is unlocked.. only thing is , is ur G72 Best buy model? If it is , quad might not work.

As Sean said, you should check before if Quad can be installed by the bestbuy version, in the G51 we simply couldnt, now the G72 had a quad version in bestbuy (09) but im not sure if the (05) can take quads, you should check with other users first on the review and owner lounge. But i dont think you will see much improvement on gaming, unless is coded for quads which not many are yet, but if you had in mind video/audio encoiding imo is worth the upgrade.

I've played around with the g72gx and it was very loud in comparison to the g73. It has only one exhaust too, so I'd be a bit wary of putting a quad in one.

I know the Q9000 is a hot cpu but it should be fine.

I swapped a core i5 for a core i7 with no hitch but I did get a noticable difference in temps.
