    Hi

Been trying to install XP Professional on my G1s (new HDD) and all has gone smoothly until driver updates. Followed the guide on this forum for slipstreaming SATA drivers via nlite.

Nearly all drivers install fine, except I am unable to install video. I also have a "problem" exclamation mark in Device Manager against:

"Mobile Intel (R) PM965/GM965/GL960 PCI Express Root Port 2A01"

which on investigation throws up the error "cannot find enough free resources it can use..disable another device, etc,etc
PLease help, any advice from someone who has installed XP on a G1s.... :( :(

That sounds like the driver for the Intel chipset. Have you installed the chipset drivers from the Asus DVD?

    Thanks for reply

Yes installed ACPI first, then chipset drivers from the XP drivers pack posted by Geosilv on these forums:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=2097089&postcount=95

As above, it seems that the drivers themselves have installed fine, it is just that there are insufficient resources.....tried the Asus support CD and it did not update the chipset drivers, said all were up to date.

Try going to the Intel site and downloading the Intel P965 Mobile chipset drivers, it's listed as "INF Update" and for video, got to tweakforce.com and download the XG Mobile 163.44 drivers, best driver I've used to date, it is as fast as the 165.01 driver but doesn't have the problem with putting the lappy to sleep and not waking up!

    Yup tried that, no joy.

Tried reinstalling, same outcome. Drivers install just fine, only there appear to be insufficient resources to load all the system devices and the PCI Express root (i.e. video card bus) will not mount, so the G1s doesn't recognise that I have a PCI express graphics card installed. Hence when i come to install drivers (modded inf included) the system can't recognise any Nvidia device installed and exits.

    Aaaaaaargh!!

This sucks. Nothing but problems with this laptop, now it won't even accept an XP install. Help please - this is making me sooo miserable :( :( :(

I think that the intel drivers control the PCI-E bus so you have to have them to install the nVidia drivers. At this point, I would say try reinstalling the OS again just to see if something got corrupted and is causing errors etc that would lead to the message you are getting.

    Nathan thanks for quick reply.

I have tried a reinstall once, will try again, and check Device Manger for specific resource conflicts to see if anything is taking up multiple IRQs when it shouldnt.

The only thing I have done after XP install before putting chipset drivers in place is to insert my USB key in order to transfer the driver pack to the HDD. Unless this has caused the OS to take up system resources with USB controllers - and I am guessing wildly here - I am lost as to why there are insufficient resources left to install the PCI Express root.

I also used a USB key to download my drivers so if it's that it's something strange.

Update- with extensive and heroic (2 hours over IM) help from someone on these forums (who shall remain nameless unless he wants to identify himself) we finally got rid of the resource conflict by reducing RAM back to 2gb. This has enabled me to install rest of drivers including video. Still doesn't like some drivers , though...

For other people with this error, it is worth checking RAM as it seems XP doesnt like 3gb in some G1s's when installing.....

Hi UKlappyman. I had the same problem when I put extra 1gb ram, I found that someone had the same problem here, I think you already been suggested this solution as there is a exact same title as this topic on the asus forum. They solved it by disabling Intel ICH8 PCI Express Root Port 5 shown in the last post. This did not work for me but a different port did (Intel ICH8 PCI Express Root Port 3 for me) after that xp recognised new hardware, the display.

Hi thanks yes I tried disabling Intel ICH8 PCI Express Root Port 5 without success, but didn't try port 3, maybe I will try that. Do you know what this port is used for?

when that solution failed for me as well I went through disabling 1 through 5 express root ports until I found that 3 was the conflicting. For me I know port 1 is lan and 2 is wireless and the rest no idea. I leave the rest disabled, they might be for esata, 1394 port ect. If I ever find that something isnt being recognized I will try and enabling one of the ports.
Edit: I should mention that when I disabled port 3 I didn't need to restart, the found new hardware dialog box came up straight away. good luck.

this worked for me too with 3gb Ram, thanks linkglar. for now i have a working xp pro installation, gonna get an image done to make things easier if I have to reinstall.

Wonder what port 3 does, tho, I can live without 1394 and esata, however...

Check this out, I installed XP Home on my ASUS G2S and Ran into the NVidia Driver problem. I cant get it to recognize any drivers for the video card. I have been searching through these forums for 2 days and it looks like this one is getting me closer to my goal. As far as PCIE ports are concerned, when I go to device manager / system devices, There is an exclamation point on Mobile Intel(R) PM965/GM965/GL960 Express PCI Express Root Port - 2A01. I disabled this item and no longer had function in my USB ports on my notebook. My question is, where are the rest of the ports that I am supposed to be able to disable? That is the only item that makes reference to PCI Express Root Port. I would really appreciate any suggestions short of throwing this thing off the roof. Thank you

OK I removed one stick of ram which takes me down to 2 and I got the video drivers to load. I'd really like to stay with the 3 gigs. Any help is appreciated
