I know why. For whatever reason my laptop isn't detecting when I unplug headphones. It still seems to think my headphones are plugged in when they're not. I've already tried to reinstall my audio drivers but this did not help
I've tried unplugging/replugging two different sets of headphones a dozen times each, nothing. I can't get sound to come back out the speakers, headphones work fine

iirc, there were similar problems on the g50's about the switch phyiscaly being broken. not 100% sure though. never had it happen on my g50 or g51j.

Have you tried to go into the windows control panel and see if you have more than one audio out option and can manually change it? I dont have that on the W90 but not familiar with the G51 so its worth checking at least.

I called Asus support... useless. They blamed it on software even though the problem is the same in Express Gate which makes it pretty clear it's a hardware problem. They won't let me RMA until I system restore which I *really* don't want to do! -
Had the same in my mobile phone, it's just a pin bent inside.
Bad news that have to open it up to fully fix it most time, but even after then
it is most likely to go broken again after a while.
So either full time external speaker / headphone, or remove pin and full time internal speaker even with external connected. -

Download the free trial of Acronis, backup your stuff to a external drive. Restore & RMA

Is there any way to force sound out speakers & headphones? I'd be fine with that.
I'd also rather RMA and remove the HDDs myself prior to sending them in.. wonder if they'd allow that...
I also can't really backup; my external HDD is too small to do a proper disk image. It's a royal PITA to reformat. This sucks . -
ASUS Tech Support told me to re-install audio drivers even though I knew it wouldn't fix the problem... Newegg is going to let me RMA it for a new machine.
You're not the only one with this issue:
No sound on g51
My post is towards the end of the thread but:
System always thinks something is plugged into the headphone jack when there isn't.
I've been told that since the headphone jack doubles as an SPDIF jack, that repairing it by yourself is inadvisable and not as easy as say, replacing a headphone jack on an iPod.
Cheers,

Yup, mine is green like that picture. Super. I'm two days too late to RMA it back to Newegg... not that I'd want to anyway, shipping is super slow and super expensive. I guess it's going back to Asus.

So does anyone know if it's possible to disable headphone detection? I know they aren't totally disabled because the startup boom still works, it's just a driver limitation. I've found instructions that desktop Realtek drivers can disable the headphone detection... don't see any options like this in our drivers
I'm going to mail it away next week, I hope I get it back before Christmas.. -

The jack could be shorted, you could try bending it back (gently!) with a paperclip.

OK so I've RMA'd and Fedex is coming tomorrow to pickup my laptop. However, the Asus person said I don't need any shipping labels? Is that right? It seems strange to me.
She says I just give the guy my confirmation number and he takes it away no questions asked. I've never done this before but he seems really strange to me not to label a package I'm mailing. -
UPS & FedEx both have RMA services where all you do is give them the package. Just make sure you get a receipt.
UPS ended up destroying a Panasonic 50" 1080P G15 several months ago (entire glass panel shattered). Newegg just said pack it up the best I can and UPS would come by the next day to pick it up. No need for you to do the return label. UPS & FedEx have the proper labels with them.
Cheers,
Kermee
P.S. I finally dropped off by G51VX-X3A for RMA yesterday for the headphone/speaker issue. -
Received my RMA. We'll see how long the headphone jack lasts

I'll admit I was pretty disheartened when I read this thread. I think this is happening to a lot of people, I'm not sure why, I've never encountered this problem before. But I will say this, I got my sound working again without sending this away.
After reading the link to the other thread on the first page of this one, somebody described the problem as related to the spring pin in the 3.5 inch audio port being stuck.
This is the issue. The spring pin was stuck. And having dealt with Spring pin related problems in the past, I do what I always did. I shut off my lap top, spun it over, (Closed the lid first) and started prodding the hole with a saftey pin. Yea, not very professional, but you'd be amazed at what you can achieve with house hold tools.
Anyways, I blew some compressed air into the hole, (I didn't shove the nozzle in there, but just at the hole, to clean out any dust), and continued to prod the hole liberally with my safety pin. [Insert crude hole prodding joke here]. I didn't hear a click, I didn't see anything differently when I looked into the hole, but I decided to give up and restart my machine. Boom it worked.
Hope if you try this, it works for you, and you don't void the warranty by poking too hard. Like I did with my last girlfriend. -
I am now in the fine company of folks whose ASUS G51Js (or similar models) have a locked up headphone jack.
I have the same indications as others in that the Realtek manager indicates that the headphone jack is in use even when it is not. Admittedly, I plug in and unplug speakers from that jack all the time since my laptop often travels with me away from my desktop speakers. It does appear that one of the contacts is not properly springing back into position when a plug is removed. That would keep the plug grounded and make the laptop think something's there.
I really wish I didn't have to RMA this since I really don't have the time to be without my home/work/travel computer for the time it takes to get fixed. Also, can ASUS give me any assurance that they won't replace the jack with one that will also fail a few months after buying the laptop?
I'm already a little disappointed in the screen on this laptop (very poor off-angle viewing) and now this?!?
Help! My G51J's speakers just died
