I had my external speakers plugged into my laptop as I usually do. I unplugged them expecting to listen to the rest of the online video through the laptop speakers but no sound comes out.

I've checked all the things like whether Mute is on (it isn't) the volume is at the max - device manager doesn't show any problem.

I plug the external speakers back in and sound comes out.

I've turned the laptop off and on. The laptop speakers were working the other day. I don't understand. The only thing I can say is that the hole where I plug in the external speakers into has a red light on inside. I never noticed that before but I have no idea if that is unusual You have to look at the side of the laptop to notice it.

Can any one figure out what is going on?

RealTek High Def Audio? (currently the most common in laptops)

I had a problem back with one of the versions of their drivers that caused my laptop to play white noise when the external volume control was set to 0 and then it eventually crashed while I was plugging and unplugging my headset for ventrilo use. Updated the drivers and got a fix.

If that's what kind of audio you have, have you tried updating the drivers?

Sorry, best I can think of.

It was suggested in another forum that the release from the headphone jack is stuck. I think that is what it s b/c I have had to jam the jack in a certain position in order to get the external speakers to play without static. SO this time when I pulled the jack out it didn't release the the sound back to the speakers.

I presume that is why the red light is coming out of there.

    Anyone have any ideas?

If a red light is coming out, I believe that the computer does believe a jack is inserted (maybe a SPDIF jack).

If it is that, I don't see other options than push the plug back in and remove it again. Twist it in there. Use different devices, e.g., heaphones. Maybe some of the plugs are larger and they will trigger the release. That would only work if the release is mechanical, not if it is electronic. In the latter case, I don't know how it could be fixed...

A driver reinstall wouldn't hurt, just to make sure it's not a software problem. You could also try the sound in some LiveLinux distro such as Knoppix, to completely eliminate software as the problem.
