I just finished building my S96J, and it's not booting. I triple checked that the memory, cpu, hard drive, and dvd drive were in place. However, when I press the power button, the screen shows nothing, and all I hear is two quiet beeps. after the dvd drive spins up, I sometimes hear another two quiet beeps just like the first one. I hear hard drive too.

What's going on? The CPU did pop out once because it stuck to the heat sink and when i tightened the metal clips down it wasn't seated in, however it was flat above the plastic socket. That's the only thing I can think of. don't know why else it doesn't work. I don't know what those beeps mean. Maybe someone knows where to find the codes for the AMI Bios for S96J?

Sounds like defective CPU or RAM - although most likely CPU, most defective RAM will allow boot up - but will fail in POST - that is ofcourse dependant on the amount of damage done to teh RAM.

If you can try and return the CPU adn RAM for a swap and try again.

Try to take the cpu out and put it again, don't forget to lock it on the socket. And double check whether the small paper on the cpu heat sink and paste is moved already,
    Cheers

actually both gpu and cpu have AS5 on them, with original paste removed. do you think i coulda crushed the cpu tightening it down? The clips gave a lot of slack though. and the cpu was rested evenly on top of the plastic socket, although not in it. I quickly removed the sink and reseated the cpu.

by the way I also tried only 1 stick of 1gb pc25300 instead of 2 and it doesn't work.

Okay the quiet beep like sound is coming from the DVD drive, not the motherboard. So basically I have a computer that doesn't do anything when I turn the power on.

To clairfy what MilestonePC just said. You know there is a screw on the socket to llock it down. Once you put the CPU in, you turn the screw 1/2 turn clockwise to lock it in.
That sounds like what you forgot to do by your discription of the CPU falling out. Hope that helps.

HAHAHAHAHAH ROFL HAHAHAHAHAHA I'm gonna have a good laugh at this afterwards. I could have sworn the diagram on the socket tells me to turn cc wise to lock.. hm...... bad diagram. I finally turned it cwise and it works! Thanks all for your support and concern. I really feel the sense of a community in this forum. I guess I'll be on here often now to learn and share with others. Thanks again!

btw everything else went without a hitch. Will install Windows XP Pro now and will try to figure out Mac OS X 10.4.6 later tonight.

By the way, what's the best disk partitioning software that I can download? I need a 15gig for mac, 40 for windows and another 20 for other stuff
