I've got a customized W5f with T2600, 2 x 512, and a 7200 rpm hdd and just came up with super pi to 2 million in an abysmal 2 mins 26 secs. Could it be McAfee Security Suite slowing the crud out of my system...or the 67 other processes running in the background? Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

67 processes is a lot. you should definitely cut down on them. maybe use a different antivirus like avast (free).

Never actually cut down on processes. Do I need to use a program to help out?

Thanks for the direction. Hopefully I'll come out of this w/ a little bit of knowledge (and a faster, expensive computer).

You might have your laptop on a power setting such as "Portable" or Notebook, etc. which would cause it to cut down on processor speed. Make sure that you have it set to "Always On" or "Maximum Performance", etc. while plugged in to ensure the greatest possible performance.
-
Thanks, will try that as well.

start run msconfig. check out services and startup. You can cut the stuff you dont need down there.

Did all of the above and super pi runs at 1 min 8 secs. Wow. I think the main culprit was setting my Power4 gear to Super Performance. That cut my time by about 50 secs. Seems stupid and probably is on my part, but thanks for all the help.

Yea i was on my brother's gateway m460 and did the super pi and it was 6 minutes!!!! i was like wdf! then i realized i had the setting on "max battery" so afterwards it was about 2 min. still not the fastest but huge improvement (being set at home/desk under battery settings). I'm guess the laptop should be plugged in to do accurate super pi?

try not to use msconfig, but rather services.msc
you can really stuff things up with msconfig... but you can always turn services back on again if you turn the wrong stuff off without any BSOD

^ nice, thanks for that.

If you want to get the best super pi time start your PC in safe mode. That way your only running like 8 services in the background vs the average 30-50. It cut my time on my AMD 3200+ @ 2.51ghz from 1:26 to 1:21
