So here is the support ticket I opened with ASUS:
WELL past their supposed 48 hour turnaround - an entire week later - this is what I get back:Code:[Product Information] *Product Type : Notebook *Product Model : N53SV *Product S/N : BBN0AS32479945B000 *Operating System : Windows 7 64bit [Problem Description] Was using the computer (don't remember what I was doing specifically, just using the internet, instant messaging, etc) and started to hear a whirring/buzzing sound. I put it into sleep mode - as it shut down the whirring slowed into a slower grinding/clicking. From what I can tell the sound is coming from the left side of the computer, maybe from the fan. Tried to turn it on again once more and again heard the rattle/clicking, and shut it off to avoid possibly causing more damage.
Now, I don't have a great deal of experience fixing computers, but it seems like what she is telling me to do is completely irrelevant to my problem and messing with my BIOS seems especially unnecessary and risky considering the computer had been working fine before. When I turn it on, it's making sounds that are wrong. There was technically no real failure of anything that made it unusable - I decided to shut it down and not turn it back on myself because it sounded like it was about to explode.
Should I even continue to go down this road? I'm at a loss as to what to do. I guess I could take apart and see for myself - but then what? Or is re-installing the audio driver (WHY?!) and flashing my BIOS really going to fix my problem? I'm not saying it couldn't - again, I'm no expert - but this sounds very very fishy to me.![]()

sometimes i think asus email support people don't understand english.
if the sound is from the left side, it's probably the fan. Does it sound like the fan?
do you have lots of dust in there?
get HWMonitor and watch temps right after boot up, and during normal use to see if you have fan failure.
you will probably get better support over the phone. -
Note that you aren't allowed to post private correspondence per the forum rules. You are free to paraphrase the message while leaving the exact words and name of anyone involved out of it in your post. Also, yeah the problem is likely unrelated to the bios. flash to the new one anyways as that will allow to take the issue back to Asus without having to go through all that crap again.

ASUS email route back to Taiwan, the response I got before was like they have "engineers" at their repair center fixing laptops.
You should call their phone number and probably try get them replace a fan at a local repair center.
ASUS - email = no go.
Help - I think ASUS support is trying to screw me over
